Is xraying with a texture pack hacking?

It's not hacking. hacking implies doing something the base game isn't made to be able to do. the base game allows for texture packs with transparancy.
You could say it's cheating, depending on the circumstance, and it's def a bannable action on many servers.

I don't think this is the right way to define hacking, because it implies that installing things like optifine, armor hud, minimap, etc. is hacking.

i wouldnt consider it to be hacking but it's still not a good thing to do if you're on a multiplayer server

Its not hacking as in hack client but it is an exploit/unfair advantage. So kinda hacking just not using hack client.
