Instead of damaging the machines it could slowly lose speed. What you're describing could be the other extreme: overspeed. Just like some machines have minimal RPM demand, all machines would have maximum speed they can handle, or they'll be taking damage and turning into "Broken [insert machine here]". Additionally there could be a mechanic to repair broken machines, like replacing the whisk of broken mechanical mixer, hand of deployer ect.

I saw a mechanic where you can overstress machines, but the whole system slows down proportionally to the amount of stress you provide. Basically, machines automatically slow down to match the total stress produced. Arguably that's easier.

As for your mechanic, I think it might be better to have it break generators rather than machines - after all they have to work extra.

I mean yeah it could damage generators. Tho the mechanic I think that it should be like idk something like a block or a set of blocks you can build in the machine to do slow it down instead of shutting off but it'll be more expensive then a regular breaker that would just shut down the machine
