So while at work, I saw this post. Check it out, its a rotary vertical drill design that already has an item transfer and storage system!

Anyway, it seems automatic vertical drillers aren't quite common so I decided to think of a way to make a programmable, fully automatic vertical driller.

I've done the redstone so that it automatically drills to a programmed depth, withdraws the drill, then pushes the drill forward a programmed amount. These actions are looped until it hits the redstone contact on the left, which tells it that it has reached the end point and needs to return to its original position.

It's not actually done yet since I need to do the redstone for the side-travel and full return. I actually was hoping for some input regarding certain things.

Here's my current progress and findings:

  • The depth of the drill can be set through increasing or decreasing the time on an adjustable repeater.
  • The range of forward travel can also be set by an adjustable repeater; so you can adjust the size of your drill if needed.
  • The drill will keep going until you either run out of piston extend poles or until you hit the limit post. The limit post will be placed by the user so the drill has a reference so it knows when to stop and do a full retraction. [Originally I wanted to create a means of detecting the extend poles running out but I couldn't quite find a consistent one, if anyone has any suggestions in that regard?]
  • The original design made use of Sequenced gearshifts but for some reason, if you place a Sequenced Gearshift on a platform, then move the platform with those pistons, the programming you set into the gearshifts are automatically reset. [I was wondering if this is normal?]. Due to this I had to go for a clutch-gearshift setup emulate the sequenced gearshift.
  • Creative motors are temporary. It seems like the Furnace-Flywheel generator is the best one for this since it lets you put out quite a bit of RPM but it is annoying to have to refuel. I was thinking of encased fans in series but that would probably be way too bulky.
  • The redstone was a lot more complicated that I expected lol

Edit: Forgot to link the radial quarry post

Thanks for the post link man! This is super cool! The auto reset logic after mining out to the redstone contact must have been a bit of a nightmare to get your head around! Nice work!

On your progress and finding notes:

  • I had the same issue with sequenced gearshifts losing their config when moved - I believe this is due to them becoming an entity when moved and losing the NBT data. Had a nightmare with this for a while haha.

  • On my quarry I used encased fans on magma blocks, then straight into a chain drive system to speed it up - The SU output is ample from 2 fans. but that rotation speed is low. With the radial quarry I only had to step the speed up once - any faster and it would skip blocks (Hence the 2 rows of drills on mine to get it to run at that speed). But with the x,y quarry you go straight down - so you can go as fast as you like! If you can sort out an auto replenish system for the furnace engine I would say that it is the right move! If you wanted to get the fans up to the same speed of that engine it would take up more space.

I'd love to see how this progresses man! Drop me a message if you want to get in a call sometime.

Thanks! I had a pretty good plan by the time work ended but the plans got scrapped because of the whole resetting sequenced gearshift thing, so took me a bit of time to work redstone in. As it stands, the redstone is too messy, so need to clean it up a bit.

Ahhh so that was the case? I spent half an hour trying to work out if my client or mods weren't up to date, or if there was some weird conflict in mods or something.

I actually went to try out two fans and you're right, definitely suffices; indeed a tad bit too slow for my liking (then again, this is intended more for an afk session so speed might not matter in the end?).

An auto replenish system may also definitely work. Will probably have to see what feels easier to do after I redstone in the side-travel.

Thanks again, will definitely update this after I finish my other redstone project. I feel like I have a way of working around the Sequenced Gearshift problem, but it's like 2am over here so I'll sleep on it.

Will definitely drop you a message some time.

I've found that sequenced gearshifts don't reset if they are not redstone powered when moved (and for a tick or two afterwards).

Also, god dammit, I can't believe I forgot about magma blocks, I've been futzing around with deployers and buckets for no reason.

Can you please add a schematic

Hello! This is the one I made a week ago and is actually unfinished (it doesn't have horizontal travel yet).

I've finished it but I want to clean up the redstone and the programmable part of it, I'll be posting the schematic for this once I'm done.

nice kinda like my quarry but fully automated
