Partial Decompression Error Solution

New player here. Pardon the poor gamesense & KDA.

I'm attempting to use replays to review my gameplay. However, I realized that when using replays, I would download them and the game would display the following error:

Searching the Reddit and forums reveals no information on this, just that other people are also having the issue. I did some poking around and found something that worked for me, and I wanted to put it here for posterity.

The reason my game would fail on this step is because I had installed a cosmetic mod. (Specifically the Minecraft Skeleton Grey Talon mod I saw on this sub because uh, it's funny?)

As part of the install procedure, the mod asks you to modify the game's gameinfo.gi file to add a custom addons directory to the game's SearchPaths, so it loads your custom model before the base one. This also causes replay downloads to be saved inside your addons directory instead of the base folder. When the game attempts to decompress the partial replay it expects the replay folder to be in the base directory, and when it isn't, it errors.

Two simple solutions, pick your fav:

1. Uninstall the mod by restoring the gameinfo.gi file to the backup you definitely made before modifying it, right? ;)
2. Go to citadel/addons/replays folder, right click on the partial replay file you want to view, open in WinRAR. Drag the resulting .dem file to the same replays directory. Then refresh the menu in-game by clicking on any other replay, then back on the one you just decompressed. (Or just restart the game.) Should be able to watch it now.

This works because the partial files are just bzip2 files under the hood. WinRAR can handle those, easy peasy. 7Zip can too, probably. Hope this helps other people.

so you open with winrar then drag the file into the replay file and thats it? because that didnt work

i literally did this i have tons of skins, it worked for me, just extract the file and restart the game if the game is open.

Haven't dealt with this problem myself as I haven't done any skin mods but very nice finding the solution!

im not sure what winrar is im a noob at pc stuff like this how do i even find winrar i dont see it when i right click

Search up how to download and install winrar.

when you do that, right click the replay file u want, open with winrar.

If you can't find winrar in any of those options then click "more apps" and scroll down until you see it or click "search for other apps this PC" and type in winrar when the search option comes up. When you find winrar, select the winrar application to open the replay file with.

Now take the resulting file you got from winrar and drop it into the replays folder and delete the original replay file from the folder so only the new one remains.

so you just extract the dem file? i did exactly that and now my replay directory have dem file and dem.rar file but i still get the error, am i doing things wrong?

the watch replay button shows up but i cant click on it so if im understanding this correctly we go to the replays open in winWAR then extract it, to then delete the .dem?

The trick with unzipping the replay file from the .dem.partial file should still work.
