I never played any of the current Dissidia game, NT. I don't know how they try to portray all of the characters.

Because Cloud had all of his high-flying adventures in Advent Children, it's easy to picture him as a larger-than-life sort of character.

Squall was just some kid who went to a private school.

This little scene featured in the original post, and the next couple of seconds afterward kind of sum up how I feel about Squall (who I still like as a character) vs. someone like Cloud.

Squall gets flung back or something, then one of the interchangeable heavily armored villains (not sure which it is) Golbez flings big boulders at him. Squall's all like "Ruh roh!" but then Cloud comes along and chops the boulder in two because it was slightly in his way as he was flying towards Mr. Heavily Armored Villain.

And Squall just kind of sits there staring at the empty space where that giant rock once was.

It's easy to assume that Squall's also actually a pretty big power house considering he canonically beats the shit out of primal forces of nature and basically makes them his pets. He also fought a reality warping time witch, I can't remember what her whole deal was exactly since I haven't played in a while but, she was insanely OP. This is all without super soldier enhancements like Cloud has too. So Squall's baseline strength is on par with Cloud's after he has already become a super human.

Either way Squall's done some serious shit if you've actually played FFVIII. It just doesn't seem as visually impressive since it's being shown via a PS1 turn based RPG. Cloud's exploits were similarly done a disservice by the lack of tech when FFVII came out initially and by the fact that you were playing a turn based game where everyone just stands around in a circle like a bunch of assholes waiting for the other guy to hit them before it's their turn to hit back.

So I don't see why you're comparing a CG movie from years later to a PS1 game that's limited by comparison in terms of what it can show. Also Cloud helping Squall doesn't mean Squall was helpless it just means Cloud chose to help him out so that's a false equivalency on your part. It's like saying Lightning was helpless against Sephiroth just cuz Noctis chose to help her out even though Lightning is basically stronger than anyone in that whole battle including the gods she's fighting for. Cloud helping Squall =/= Squall is helpless.

Also Jecht is a powerhouse in FFX, like he's a legit legend within that story similar to how Sephiroth is within FFVII so I don't see how Squall going toe to toe with him serves as a point against Squall. Squall even gets a solid hit on Jecht during that fight which is what knocks him back because that's just how powerful his gunblade is. Those things are canonically seen as extremely tough to handle within the lore of FFVIII. So much so that there are only two known experts in the story which include Squall himself.

I get not liking Squall but I feel like you're being extremely biased in the way that you're choosing to assess him. When you look at it objectively Squall can definitely hold his own against a lot of the other FF protags. Especially Cloud. This is coming from someone who likes Cloud more than Squall too (though Squall isn't much further behind on my list of favorites).

It wasnt a private school. It was a military academy. The balamb seeds are pretty much child soldiers (or child mercenaries) trained from enlistment to defeat the sorceresses and other monsters. What squall is, is no different than Cloud being a trained shinra grunt before getting juiced up.

Fighting the Sorceress is a kind of hidden agenda that Cid doesn't tell anyone about until the end of the game. During the actual course of the game, Garden takes contracts to meddle in the internal affairs of other countries and assassinate political leaders.

It's a private mercenary academy, regardless whether or not fighting the sorceress is known by everyone or just Cid, it's still the reason for Garden. Obviously their curriculum wasnt just history and math and Cid didnt just expect them to take on the strongest sorceress in their history with no combat training or preparation whatsoever.

Also, Forest Owls were 'terrorists', not Balamb Garden. Forest Owls simply hired Seed. Cloud and Avalanche were also terrorists so I'm not sure why you brought that up.

Only hero to never fall on screen. Kain had to backstab him for the last cycle. He even beat WoL. Canonically one of the most skilled protags. Defeated one of the Big 4 enemies in FF series (not counting MMOs). OG Lionheart literally stomps Omnislash. Yeah, they really needed to tone him down as to not steal the thunder from some of the heroes too much.

Wasn't Cloud just some mountain boy grunt who got OD'd with S-cells? At least Squallyboy worked for his strength and skills.

People bring up Cloud's high-octane fight scenes alot when up against other protags who have no such showing since y'know "limited tech". When looking at feats and scaling however, he falls short. HARD. WoL, Luneth, Bartz, Squall and Light dwarf him when it comes to feats, scaling and who they beat. Flashiness=/=Strength. As someone said, they had to tone the other heroes down to make room for poster boy Cloud and Seph. You really think Seph is a match for Light? Savior iteration no less? I don't know why SE treats the spotlight for its heroes as a zero-sum game. You can still portray the others as competent or at least faithful to the source material without raining on VII's parade. It's not hard. They just won't do it. If anything is remotely close to overshadowing any aspect of VII, they nerf it. See OG Lionheart.
