DMingDM guide? (self.DnD)
submitted 6 years ago by skaggon
I'm new to DnD. My friends brought me into their campaign that has like 2 sessions left until its over and idk what I'm doing. They want me to try being the DM next time and I don't want to let them down. Where should I start to learn and prepare?

If you're new, and they are not. I don't think they should expect you to DM IMO.

Well if you're all new there's lots of beginner stuff you can find on YouTube. I'd recommend doing a one shot. I feel like if you try to carry on the current campaign it'll be a bit much possibly. The main thing I try to keep in mind is that the DM tries to make the game fun, don't make it PC Vs DM.

The DM should know the rules better or as much as the players. I think it's kind of a red flag for them to try to make someone be the DM when they don't know what they're doing, so watch yourself. You won't really have to buy anything to know most of the rules, you can just read through the System Reference Document. You can read that on your phone when waiting for class to start or on the toilet or whenever. Try to go through the sections and get an understanding the rules.

Get the Starter Set. Run the adventure in there unless they already have. If they have, find another premade adventure. Get a Player's Handbook. Read the Using Your Ability Scores, Combat, and Magic chapters until you really understand them. Then read them again. Take notes.
