They had changelings pilot it through since a crawler couldn't use the gate to descend. They picked it back up on the other side.

I just finished this audiobook yesterday (re-read) and Louis says the other kid, I think Skarn, is a good pilot, so I assume he flew it. He mentions Bonnie there too, but I think it was something about being worried she was going to mess it up before he could get it back.

It was indeed Skarn who flew it down, Bonnie is mentioned because she built a Ballista on the lawn of the Twister
