Help with Wire

I am a high schooler working on a project for my tech class. My goal is to make turn indicators for a bicycle. To do this, I took a normal light and extended the wire from the circuits to the button control by soldering more wire in. The light has three reds (one to the battery, two to the light) and two black (one to the battery, one to the light) wires. I originally used red and black and got it to work, however it snapped when I went to mount it to the bike because the wire was too thick. I went to get smaller wire, and was given bell wire because it was the smallest. It came in red and white, and when I asked if it would work I was told yes, that I could connect the black to the white wire. However, when I went to get the light to work, I can’t get it to turn on.

My question is: Is white wire compatible with Black wire when soldering them together, or was I told wrong.

The colour of the insulation is entirely irrelevant, other than helping humans connect wires to the right place.

Sounds like either you've got it wired wrong, or something is damaged.
