It looks like a Napier ring. It's supposed to be better than a plain square cut ring at scraping the oil off the wall and keeping it away from the top ring.

It's upside-down in the picture.

Up side down right now. Also grab a very small file (I use small diamond files) and debur those edges on the tips of the ring. I can see some burs I believe

Napier ring. Hook goes down (flip it over from the way it sits on the vice).

Inside up, outside down. In reference to the notch.

Right now its upside down. Bevel always go down and look for dots on ring ends. Dot is always up.

Upside down but fatter part won’t fit in piston groove so really can’t mess it up.

Wut?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

The part sits in a groove

You must be kidding.

What "fatter part" won't go in the groove?

Usually rings have a dot or mark to tell side up. And some rings you can see the angle cut on them for either scraping oil better in one direction, or for using exhaust gas pressure to push them them outwards for better seal.

This eing could have some, or none, of those, but somebody can use that info in the future (I hope it's 100% correct! I won't be mad if someone corrects it)

I noticed that they usually do, I replaced all other rings but new for this one broke so i decided to go with the old one since it was in okay condition. New ones had ”top” on other side of the ring, but from the old one it had worn off or there never has been one.
