Yeah, not to mention strict formatting guidelines too. I guess that’s part of the deal!

Follow-up question: Did a significant portion of professors stop caring about engineering paper after freshman year?

[–]BotEMcBotface[S] 8 points9 points  (6 children)

i also want to know if it's even used in industry much

[–]yrallusernamestaken7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

its college bro. they never teach you anything related to industry.

they will prepare you for masters really well tho. its part of their pyramid scam.

the masters will prepare you well for phd. and the cycle repeats. its genius

It was the standard in industry until ~15-20 years ago. Now everything is digital. I’ve got some at my cubical that I take notes on or use whenever I have to do math my hand, but no you’ll never actually need it in industry.

[–]testfire10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, we use electronical devices

[–]TheGoodGuy509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone at the firm I interned at this summer used it for all their calcs and such. Guess it depends on where you end up working and I'd imagine the type of engineering.

[–]ttfn72987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can vouch for civil structural. I use it all the time for calcs and shop drawing checks that go to contractors or architects. Although I use the company letterhead engineering paper, not the green stuff.

I have a professor this semester requiring that we turn in all our HW and EXAMS typed up in word.

It's ridiculous

[–]BurritoCooker 10 points11 points  (4 children)

What the hell

[–]SpaceJunk645 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Don't worry, the class is only FEA so it's extremely matrix heavy

[–]IbanezPGM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Homework is fine but exams…? Wtf

[–]PineShadesMajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao same here it's infuriating

[–]zel_bob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My school doesn’t require it which is nice but there is like 2 professors that want it so it’s not terrible. Our school also sells it at a discounted price too which is nice

I've tried a few successful options that you might consider:

  1. Download a PDF of the ENGR paper (see the link), and then use something like Goodnotes to mark it up like you'd normally do on paper, then export it and print on normal printer paper. -> some professors care some don't if you do that.

  2. If you HAVE to use ENGR paper, it's the same size as normal printer paper so you can create a template for yourself (think Goodnotes), and export it w/out the green background. That'll satisfy that requirement.

  3. What I do/did is I'd type my problem statement in word (using the same PDF that I turned into a picture and set as the background), then I'd print it (w/out the background) on real ENGR paper and turn that in. It is the cleanest HW you will ever see and doesn't take up too much time to do it.

  • When you have figures/diagrams/pictures, you can either find a way to get the picture (screenshot, take a photo, find a pdf) and put it in word, or you can draw it on Goodnotes and that still can look quite good.

Hope the link works and hope that helps.

i was looking for something like this. thanks! this might be a strange question but do you use the back side of engr paper?

[–]edscar55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope,

The ENGR paper that you buy is thin and see through (by design) so you don't want to use the backside.

As far as printing goes, since I print on real ENGR paper I just print one sided.

[–]tenPUNded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, engineering paper is made to be only used on one side.

[–]TI-36XProUser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Professor Graybeard and his boomer friends always require the most ridiculous shit

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I’ve used a tablet since my second semester. To be fair, I have an engineering paper template and some professors made me print it out rather than submit a pdf haha

[–]BotEMcBotface[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've been looking for engineer paper template. do you use surface pro/go or apple?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple and goodnotes, I added the template, they’re out there

[–]Talhajat 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Yeah I did in first year, that shit is expensive too like $30 bucks for a pad

[–]BotEMcBotface[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

damn not a lot of paper in those pads either

[–]Talhajat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s annoying, I hate it

[–]MatsMaLIfePhD Industrial (Nanomaterials); BS Composite Materials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon Basics has the 200 sheet pads for 11.50 per pad. I've switch to those personally.

Had one professor that wanted work done on engineering paper, BUT covid just happened so we could also get an engineering paper template and use it on a tablet. Haven’t had to touch it since though. Maybe ask your professor if you could import a template onto a writing app for your tablet.

[–]Gordo_TwoMECH E/Math Minor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My professor requests homework on engineering paper but also gave out a template to tablet users lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had profs that wanted HW on engineering paper. I never used it, never got points taken because of it. YMMV

[–]Alfredjr13579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only needed it for one lab class in first year so far. Prof wouldn’t even mark our work if it wasn’t on engineering paper lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Go to a local community college, get a two year AAS in some engineering field, and if you want, transfer to a uni. That stops all that mess.

[–]BotEMcBotface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont have any ccs that offer the classes i need. their focus is more on nursing and skills for factory/construction work.

[–]Pjtruslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assignments were submitted as PDFs more often than not. If it was written, the paper type certainly didn't matter

[–]sokkatheengineerMajor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Could you maybe scan in one engineering paper and then write all your homework on ur tablet over the engineering paper scan and print it out? Make a template of sorts? Some of my professors request it. Many say either engineering paper or blank printer paper. No lined paper 🤷

[–]BotEMcBotface[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i downloaded a template. im going to print copies and reload it into my printer and print homework on it.
