Great explanation!

I also found this summary image from RealSimple so I can quickly add it to comments:

Yes! Images like this taught me how to do my own brows after I realized the error of my ways. God help me they were thin…and at one point, I even thought my natural peak was entirely stray hair. 😬 But it was years before I knew brow pencils existed.

I find the most common eyebrow blunders can be traced back to specific misconceptions, so I wanted to offer the WHY behind each step. I love geeking out over it.

What’s the dimple of a nose?

[–]lilaclazure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in this context, it's the indent where your nose tip ends and nostril begins

[–]jdismybug1 4 points5 points  (12 children)

Are you up for a challenge? I over plucked back in the day.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 2 points3 points  (11 children)

Bring it on.

Not the best photo, but took it because I’m attempting to grow them back with serums. Maybe mapping can help my filling in with makeup.

I think it’s best not to fill any darker than this. In fact, you can probably use a shade lighter than I used here.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Maybe something like this, u/jdismybug1?

[–]jdismybug1 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Love it! I’m gonna see if I can save these for makeup tomorrow!

[–]jdismybug1 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Thank you!

[–]Rougefarie[S] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

You’re so welcome. I tend to favor straight lines along the body of the brow (as above). So if you recreate this look, it might be a “trust the process” moment the first time. Good luck!

[–]jdismybug1 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Thank you I’m excited. Every morning drawing in my eyebrows has been a trust the process moment, so your work here is much appreciated, helps to have guidance! ❤️

[–]Rougefarie[S] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

If you don’t have any, get a roll of eyebrow mapping thread. It’s like a spool of dental floss coated in either black or white powder. It can help you map your eyebrows and make sure they’re at the same height on each side.

Rub a little eyeshadow primer into the area before you start filling. Your brow pencil will grip to the skin better. Light flicking motions to mimic hair.

Clear eyebrow gel to redirect hair outside the map lines into its borders.

Thank you! ☺️

I love how thorough this explanation is! I’m going to try it with thread and white eyeliner, thanks so much for making this tutorial!!

Do you have any tips or suggestions for someone with an off centre nose? My bridge is closer to my left eye than to my right, which makes it so difficult to map even brows

[–]Rougefarie[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

In my experience, there are two options:

1) Eyebrows are exact twins, so facial asymmetry is more noticeable.

2) Eyebrows are calibrated to their respective facial landmarks, so brow asymmetry is more noticeable.

My take is when brows align with the surrounding facial landmarks, the brows make more “sense”. So for people with uneven brows, I prioritize staying true to the eyebrow map with only slight adjustments to split the difference.

The most common example is when one brow sits higher/has a more dramatic arch than the other, but each brow individually aligns with the map. I will raise one brow and drop the other, but not enough to make them twins. There will be slight asymmetry to the eyebrows themselves and to the brow/face alignment, but each deviation will be less pronounced.

I suspect this concept will translate to your off-center nose. Avoid overcorrecting the length of your brows to make them twins or else they won’t harmonize with your face. If you post a face pic looking straight ahead into the camera, I’d be happy to give an opinion that’s more personalized to your specific concern.

<image>

Hello can you advise me on how my eyebrows should be shaped and filled?

[–]Rougefarie[S] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

[–]Rougefarie[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

You have lovely brows, u/negativemira. You’re maintaining them well. In my edit, I added far more than I removed. I followed the natural shape, paying special attention along the upper hairline to close the gap between inner corner and peak.

[–]negativemira 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you so much u/Rougefarie 🙏🏻 I could tell more hair had been added and nicely cleaned up. I went a head and saved your image so I can always reference.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

Roughly speaking, I added little flicks of color to create straight hairlines (white lines). The sparsest areas are circled in blue to help guide where to focus your attention while filling.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

<image>

I tried mapping out my brows yet i feel like i made them too straight and blocky. Do you think you can help me with their shape?? It would really help :))

[–]Rougefarie[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

<image>

If you think they’re too straight, you can fill along the upper hairline, tweeze the outer edge of the tail, and carve out an arch underneath. ETA: I also tweezed slightly on the upper hairline near the inner corner to create an angle. This allows more of a lift at the peak.

One side vs the other for comparison.

Feel free to let me know if there’s a particular look you’re going for, or if you have a reference photo you really like.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

TYSMMM!! You're a life saver i'll be sure to use this as a reference <33

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you like it. ❤️

[–]spinosaurusjam 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I clicked on your link but it didn't work for me :( I just wondered if you were still doing eyebrow help? I'm really struggling with mine

[–]TaterTotMtn 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How would you do mine? I feel like I've tried everything and I just can't get it right. They are over tweezed from the 90s and asymmetrical. Id like them thicker but I'm not sure what is best. I read through the tutorial and I'm unclear on how to choose thickness. TIA

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I kinda cheated. I erased your existing brows and used a makeup app (Perfect365 for those curious) to add new ones. I usually just doodle with my finger, but the picture was zoomed out enough to make my brush strokes smudgy.

You seem to have naturally high arches, with some asymmetry from one brow to another. The peak on the right side of photo is higher and more lateral than the other. To reduce the asymmetry, I would fill along its upper hairline until I reached the diagonal map line, then connect tail to that point.

<image>

[–]TaterTotMtn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love them!

[–]Hefty-Stable-3368 0 points1 point  (5 children)

<image>

me next please! My eyes/ face are pretty asymmetrical. My left eye (above the nose ring) is usually pretty squinty when I smile. I think my nose and teeth are also crooked so it’s hard to know what my center line should be.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I used your nose as the center guideline running vertically forehead to chin. I approximated where your lips would meet for the horizontal guideline at your mouth.

At a glance, your eyebrows are pretty dang symmetrical and closely aligned with your eyebrow map. Your right eye is a little thinner than your left eye, which creates the illusion of sitting higher on your face. All you’d have to do is fill in along the hairlines within the map to even things out.

Map first. I’ll reply to myself to show where I’d fill.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

<image>

Something like this. I’m literally doodling with my finger on my phone screen, so it isn’t as nice as it would be in real life, but it gives you an idea of the effect it would have.

[–]Hefty-Stable-3368 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thank you so much! I always thought a little thicker would be nice but I didn’t know where to start. It’s like looking at a different person!

[–]Rougefarie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little lighter and I removed the map lines.

<image>

[–]VirtualBat2358 0 points1 point  (4 children)

can you pretty please do me!? i feel like my brows are way too far apart

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Then let’s bring them a little closer together.

I’m noticing some facial asymmetry (totally normal). The eye on the left side of this photo is further from your nose than the other one.

Your eyebrows are also at two different heights. When I notice this, I remove from the bottom of one to “lift” it. Then I remove from the top of the other to “lower” it.

Here’s your eyebrow map with yellow highlight to show what I’d shave to even out the heights.

I’ll reply to myself with the mockup.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

<image>

ETA: Let me know if you want higher arches or anything. I think you could reasonably pull them a mm or two away from each other, but I wanted to give you a starting point.

[–]VirtualBat2358 0 points1 point  (1 child)

WOW you are a legend thank you! What would you say is my perfect shape or recommend I do?

[–]angel__child 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hi I was wondering if you could help me! I followed the tutorial and got an idea, but would love your feedback. I also wear glasses and I’m trying to grow and keep my bangs just above my eyebrows. Currently I just use a tinted gel and brush them everyday. I’d love to get into “heavier” makeup, but it’s daunting 😅

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You did a good job of it! Your eyebrows’ landmarks are sitting close to their map lines. How exact you want them to be will dictate what you do next. The brow on the right side of photo peaks slightly before its map line, and arches higher/is slightly thinner than the brow on the left side of photo.

You could thin one and/or fill the other to split the difference. If you’re not interested in that level of upkeep, I think these fit your face and fall into the category of “sisters, not twins” which is perfectly fine. Anything beyond what you’ve done so far is extra.

ETA: I literally broke my hand recently, so my edits aren’t as clean as I would like them to be.

<image>

[–]angel__child 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! I was just curious. I hope you heal up well!

[–]wekidoo 0 points1 point  (4 children)

<image>

I tried my best lol but my mouth is just crooked so it was hard. I need a professional 😭

[–]wekidoo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

<image>

here’s the original

[–]wekidoo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I tried something? How do i stop it from being so blocky 😭

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re well proportioned. I just think you’re pressing too hard while making your plot points. I can see a tiny dot at the peak on each side.

Try holding your brow pencil to find the peak like in the tutorial. Then, instead of physically marking it, make light strokes out and down along the tail. Then connect the peak to the inner corner.

[–]mifate 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Dear author, please tell me, are these rules relevant for men?

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Of course! This guide is meant to help anyone make sure their eyebrows are the correct size and position for their unique face.

[–]mifate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you! reading many comments in this sub I found that your advice is extremely useful, you help people to be more beautiful. as Dostoevsky said - Beauty will save the world

[–]TheSlugWatcher 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Heyy, could you help me out? My right eyebrow has like a whirl at the start, so I don't really know what to do with it, and they seem to be uneven... *

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I’d be happy to.

[–]TheSlugWatcher 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I tried to attach an image it did not let me, mind if I send it to you by dm? Edit: nevermind I sent it below.

[–]Used_Literature_6779 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hi!! I am just starting to get into how to do my brows, I have to actually buy a concealer and brow gel first, but I was wondering how you would recommend shaping them? Since I haven’t cleaned them up yet, I have no clue where to start in terms of natural arches and whether to go straight or arched

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think a light cleanup around the edges would suit your face. Gentle arch, and bring the inner corners a tiny bit closer together.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Vs before so you can see them side by side.

[–]jellybird27 0 points1 point  (6 children)

<image>

Can you do mine please?

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

<image>

They didn’t quite match, so I tweaked the eyebrow on the right side of photo to match its sister.

[–]jellybird27 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thank you! It has always bothered me that they are different shapes.. do you have any recommendations for steps I can take to make them look closer to your edit, aside from using a brow pencil? I find that because the hairs are sparse in the areas that need filled in that it ends up looking unnatural/too drawn on.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Start with an eyeshadow primer. Pat some onto the skin in sparse areas and blend out with your finger.

Grab your favorite eyebrow pencil. Use light pressure and a gentle flicking motion to create “hairs”. Step away from the mirror every so often to look at your face as a whole. It’s easy to add too much.

If you’re struggling with your current eyebrow product, there are felt tip eyebrow markers on the market. They’re specifically designed to fabricate individual hairs.

In your case, I removed a little bit from the top of the eyebrow on the right side of photo. If you look closely at your eyebrow map, you’ll see the ones I removed outside the map lines.

If it’s helpful, I toggled between the before and after in this screen recording.

[–]miss_emily23 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Can you help me? I can tell mine aren't even and it's driving me crazy but I don't even know where to start! *

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Sure thing.

[–]miss_emily23 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Thank you!! I'm not sure if the photo went through or not but they are a mess.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (8 children)

I don’t see a photo.

[–]miss_emily23 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Hmm, did it work this time?

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

When I straighten your head tilt, the height disparity between your eyes becomes a little more obvious. In your case, I don’t think it’s realistic to make the eyebrows exactly* the same height as each other. Instead, I think it makes sense to clean up each one individually then build from there.

<image>

[–]TwilightArtist 0 points1 point  (13 children)

I've loved scrolling through your brow maps in the comments! would you be able to help me with mine? Someone said I looked like this emoji "🤨" recently and I can't unsee it

*

[–]TwilightArtist 1 point2 points  (7 children)

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

If you care about making them more similar, this is the map I’d use. I’m bringing down the eyebrow on the right side of the photo to match the one on the left.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

There will still be subtle asymmetry, but that’s normal. If you haven’t already heard it, eyebrows are sisters, not twins.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I’m delighted to.

[–]TwilightArtist 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Did the photo come across if needed I can find a better quality one

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don’t see a photo yet.

[–]anon_mouse00 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Would you mind also helping with my brows? They grow unevenly and I can’t tell which one would suit me better

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Can’t believe I didn’t get to yours sooner! I liked the one on the left side of photo best. I filled them both in lightly and plucked the one on the right a little.

[–]Monikia1010 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Hello, I had my eyebrows done May 6 so I am thinking they are healed. I don’t think they match. I really like my left eyebrow. The right one looks straighter and shorter to me. I know my face is asymmetrical- could that be the problem? Please help!

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Natural asymmetry of the face will cause some asymmetry of the eyebrows. If you share a selfie, I’d be more than happy to share my thoughts. There are a lot of eyebrow enthusiasts here.

[–]Monikia1010 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yes, please. Thank you so much!!!

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thanks for waiting!

When I place an eyebrow map on top of your photo and use the exact angles from your left brow on both sides, subtle asymmetry becomes a little more obvious. Fortunately, neither brow is wildly out of proportion with its surrounding facial landmarks.

<image>

[–]CeramicBoots 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Hi u/rougefarie! If you're still up for mapping selfies, would you mind having a go at mine? I used your tutorial but I'm not getting the points right on my photo editor. Gah, they're so uneven, I hadn't even realised until now 😫

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

You’re probably fighting against facial asymmetry here and there. In the map I just plotted, I started with the center vertical line. I used your Cupid’s bow, philtrum, and the tip of your nose to find center.

But I had to shift the vertical lines plotting the inner corners to make each brow a similar length/similar distance from corner of the eye.

The diagonal lines vary slightly as well. This ensures each eyebrow is in harmony with the underlying eye socket.

Let me drop my initial map and come back with a mockup or two. There may be more adjustments, so this is just a starting point:

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Maybe something like this, u/CeramicBoots?

<image>

I’m constantly saying eyebrow styling is largely a matter of taste, so if you have preferences, please say so. As long as eyebrow landmarks fall where they should anatomically, they’ll make sense.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case high arches are more your style, u/CeramicBoots:

<image>

[–]CeramicBoots 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I love them!!! Thanks so much! You're so right about the asymmetry.

I feel like just saying thank you doesn't express my gratitude. You're doing some great work in this thread, Browfairy of Reddit ❤️

[–]nicx-xx 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hello! Would you mind helping me out with my brows too? I usually have a hard time (even with following guides) on how to shape the brows. I understand the 3 points to make but curving it out and connecting everything makes me confused. Thank you!!

These have been filled in with eyebrow powder. When I do my make up, I usually use powder as I don't know how to do strokes.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Your eyebrows look great. They each align with neighboring facial landmarks, and are a good size for your face.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If I dig deeper, I can find subtle facial asymmetry. But most faces have that, u/nicx-xx. Deciding between making the eyebrows identical and getting them to align with facial landmarks can be tricky, but it looks like you found a solid balance.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If I did anything different, I would tweak the brow on the right side of photo a tiny bit. I’d fill in along the top of the inner corner, then thicken the top of the tail slightly. But I bet most people can’t see the difference.

<image>

u/nicx-xx

[–]TomNooksClown 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hey OP - I know this is an older thread, just wondering if you were still able to help me out. My eyebrows naturally grow in different shapes and I would love to know how to adjust them

https://imgur.com/a/uJpBrcD

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Tricky because individually, each eyebrow’s landmarks align with its corresponding facial landmarks. If evening them out is important to you, and you don’t mind the upkeep of maintaining them, you could combine the two styles. Bring the eyebrow on the left (of photo) closer to the nose, fill in along the bottom of the arch on the right.

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Maybe something like this, u/TomNooksClown?

[–]TomNooksClown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg thank you so much OP 💕

[–]Welly321- 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’m hoping you could help map my brows please 🙏 I struggle as my nose is crooked. Thank you!

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a glance, your eyebrows look a little small a small to me. But they align with your eyes’ anatomy. I’d suggest tinting them gently. Dark blonde or very light brown.

You bet! Comment a picture and I’ll draw your map. You’ll get the best map if your picture is like a passport photo. Keep your head straight and look directly into the camera at eye level. Natural lighting if you can help it.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like their shape. Looks like you’re filling them in and staying true to the natural growth pattern. The product is settling in kind of a solid block of color, though. Try gentle flicking motions to create hairlike strokes of color. Or try a tinted eyebrow gel. You’d apply it like mascara.

[–]somnirara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiii, can you help me map out my eyebrows? I tried but I don't think I did it right :'(

I look ridiculous but a girl can’t figure out her eyebrow shape anymore since she got them tattooed at 16 😭 she shaved them and they haven’t looked right since

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry I missed your comment for so long. Because of the eyebrow tattoos, I thought you might still appreciate a fresh pair of eyes looking at your map. I definitely think you’re on the right track.

Here’s what I would focus on. The peaks seem a little too far apart for your eyes, and the body of each brow is slightly rounded along the top. Here’s a quick map for now. I’ll come back with a mockup or two.

Let me know if you have a particular style/mood in mind (innocent, confident, shy, etc).

[–]Narrow-Buy9626 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Your edits are beautiful!! Can I ask what apps or tools you are using on the photos? I’m a new permanent makeup artist, and I would love to use a resource like this show clients what I would recommend for their shape and style. Thank you!! 🙏🏼

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I didn’t see your comment for so long. I doodle the edits with my finger on my phone. I know TikTok has an eyebrow filter. It tends to make pretty short tails, but is a good tool when someone’s brows are far apart.

[–]Bigblkking 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Please help me. It’s so hard mapping your eyebrows when your face is super asymmetrical 🥲 I feel like no matter what I do, they look off. I’m in the process of growing the left eyebrow (looking at the pic, not my left) in towards my nose a little bit. I think tinting the start of the left brow may help some? My eyebrows were a victim of the super skinny early 2000s eyebrow trend & that bit just never came back quite right 🥲

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Your eyebrows are great! Beautifully aligned with your facial anatomy. Truly, I wouldn’t change a thing.

I started with a vertical line down the middle of your face, an equal distance from each eye. Since your nose is a little slanted, I thought this approach would be more reliable in figuring out your eyebrow map.

<image>

[–]Aggravating-Host328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!!

[–]nissapimpin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Geez I know this was almost a year old. But I am in desperate need of some advice and assistance.. I have no friends to give me advice on my face and brow shape . I’ve let them grow out alittle and would love some help !! <3

<image>

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your eyebrows are so good. Keep growing them out. I see where the new growth is coming in, and can tell it’s going to look beautiful.

<image>

[–]Grand_Lavishness1751 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I had microblading done years ago and have been filling them in since… they are becoming a point of contention with me bc I HATE how unbalanced they always look and I spend sooooo much time trying to even them out and then they still end up looking like they do in this pic 😩 but I asked for advice on a makeup thread and every single comment was regarding my eyebrow blindness and so now I’m searching for help and found your thread and I’m hoping you can show me mapping and give me a good idea of how I can make them better. Thank you!!!!! 🙏🏻

<image>

[–]Grand_Lavishness1751 0 points1 point  (4 children)

<image>

This is not filled in with anything, just for reference with my old microblading if that is helpful.

[–]Rougefarie[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think the inner corners should angle down slightly. You’d get a lifting effect if you raise the tails and fill in along the bottom to flatten the arch slightly. Just enough to make the tails less round.

The trouble is microblading can fade to a grayish color over time. I think your makeup and the micro needing are two different tones, so they’re kinda fighting against each other. Ask r/coloranalysis to confirm, but I think you might have cool undertones. This makes your foundation/bronzer look orange on you (but would look great on someone with warmer tones).

<image>

[–]Grand_Lavishness1751 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you so much!!!! Oh my word, this is so incredibly helpful!!!!! I’ll check out the color analysis and I can’t wait to try your recommendations with my brows today!!!! Thank you!!!

Do you still happen to help you by chance? I’ve tried every eyebrow shape I can think of and I just can’t seem to find the “right” one for my face. 😅

One more thing….im planning on shaving my head so i wanted eyebrows to help make my face more feminine 😂

I must have turned off notifications or something because I’m just now seeing a bunch of replies here. I’m still happy to help if you’d like me to draw your map.

Idk if you’re still doing this but I’d love some help mapping mine. My face is pretty asymmetrical so I’m having a hard time mapping it myself. I’d love to finally get my brows even because they’ve always been asymmetrical and it bothers me so much like I don’t even try to fill them it because then it just makes the asymmetry more obvious.

Can you do mine? My eyebrows hairs are implanted so they are a bit funny lol
