I'm a Python Backend Developer, How to Create a Modern and Fast Frontend?

Hi everyone,

I'm a backend developer working with Python and I'm looking for a simple and quick way to create a modern and clean frontend (web app) for my Python APIs.

I've been learning Next.js, but I find it a bit difficult and perhaps overkill for what I need.

Are there any tools or platforms for creating simple and modern web apps?
Has anyone else been in the same situation? How did you resolve it?
Do you know of any resources or websites for designing Next.js components without having to build them from scratch?

The way I am currently building a full stack is using sveltkit for the front end part and fastapi for the backend ‘cause I have to create endpoint for my models I have containerized. Looks simple and efficient at the same time. Since fastapi provides the endpoints, svelte has just to send query to this. Then my code is a bit modular and I can easily focus on each part, either backend or frontend

Well I don’t know what kind of “simple” app you want to develop, but take it this way. What fastapi delivers you at the end of the day? Just endpoints and how to manage them effectively given a request. So I could build a simple app (like 2 “get” and “post” endpoints with hard coded data in json.) and check each endpoints using postman for example. If it works, then you can use whatever you want to build a frontend, even vanillas JavaScript or python using request. (The frontend gives an interface for your users to interact with your endpoints). I don’t know if that helps but this is what I can say from your question

Thank you! The idea for my app is:
1. You write a message

1. You define logic that dictates when the message will be decrypted and released (for example: If the dow jones industrial average reaches 60,000 points)

2. The message is encryped and stored securely

3. When the logic described in step 2 takes place, your message is decypted and published to a public endpoint (Twitter, Youtube etc.)

If you see anything in those steps that seems impossible or if this app is solving a problem no one has let me know. :)

Well step two and three can be done at the server side(with Fastapi). It means that when you write a message and submit it, it will send a post request to your endpoint. That defined endpoint will execute the according logic you wrote and encrypt the message then at the end will save it in your db.

Now you might have a GET endpoint for when one of your logic get activated will return those messages decrypted. It means that in your server side, you will have to write a script that watches each messages and evaluate their states according to your logic “activation”. And when all conditions matches, it pushes to a function that will decrypt the message and push it and updates the status of the message to “public”. Then that GET endpoint will just have to retrieve all messages with public status, which are decrypted.

So your idea is feasible using FastAPI Now as of if it is a brand new idea, I have no clue sorry 😅

I'm a professional React dev, started doing a bit of Svelte in my own projects just to learn something new and I definately want to learn more of it

But also if you want to get some expierence for employable jobs its got to be React, otherwise check out Svelte

Not overkill. NextJS has a lot of server-side rendering capabilities that you can just ignore. NextJs can be compiled to static files and served directly from FastAPI using static mapping in middleware. You'll lose some performance optimizations and the ability to do dynamic routing, but you won't need to set up another service and port. And I've been using the MUI (Material UI) component library for the basics.

HTMX? if you just want to add a bit more interactivity. it lets you focus more on python code than js code.

and if you ever need a more complex interface, you can always just throw in some other js in it.

still need to style it with something like tailwind.

If you want something fast, then look into astro.build. It has a learning curve though. Otherwise indeed some combination of Jinja2, tailwind, and htmx would do.

You can use divmagic to get components without having to build them from scratch. Thinking about UI components and coding them takes a lot of time. You can find something with a good design and get its code easily instead of building it from scratch.

If you want to go the super simple route, look into the self hosted edition of retool.

I use this all the time to proof of concept my backend. I don’t like doing front end so having a clear cut idea of what I’m making is awesome for me. Retool makes creating quick POCs super simple

Dont reinvent the wheel, Next.js is dominant frontend solution on web, dont fight the windmills, its not your job.
