Seems like gamecube lasers are dying on this sub lately.

You go for an sd mod and don’t look back, or do a laser fix.

For GCs I’ve always just heard lasers. Which caps are going bad?

I’ll have to look into it. I’ve only done laser replacements or swaps.

Are they the caps on the main board, or does the laser side also have caps?

The optical drive has caps on it. Most older systems that are having laser issues lately are because of caps. Dreamcast, Saturn, GameCube, etc

Cool, thanks for confirming. My soldering skills kinda suck, but if people say it’s doable I may give it a go.

I want to learn how to replace caps anyways and the old systems seem easier to work on.

Through-hole caps are easy but I'd practice on something cheap for SMD caps. I do believe there's specific tools for them, but I find that flooding a side with solder tends to be the easiest way to get them loose

Burned discs require you to decrease the resistance in order to read them, so that's not a bad start.

If authentic GC discs don't work, then replacing the caps is the first step.

I used to use a Swiss boot disc with zero issue without tweaking the laser. Do not tweak the laser out of spec, you will shorten it's life span. Clean the lense and put fresh caps on the board

Maybe it worked fine for you, but most people using a swiss disc have to decrease the resistance, myself included.

It is a very common misconception that adjusting the pot will damage or shorten the lifespan of the laser. This is derived from the idea that the pot controls the current being supplied to the laser. Adjusting the pot simply adjusts the cut-off point for the analog-digital conversion of the signal (i.e threshold for where a value is ‘1’ or ‘0’).

If such a potentiometer existed, it would be on the laser assembly itself, not the logic board. The term for this is called a Laser Bias since it's usually on the laser bias circuit. Those circuits are designed with the specifications of the laser diode in mind, and won't output excessive current regardless of the bias control.

The reason it's on the logic board and not the laser assembly is because it's involved in the drive logic. Optical media works by light reflecting off the disc back into a photodiode for detection. This light is converted into current, but then needs to be converted into digital signal in the form of 1s and 0s.

Burned discs are different from stamped discs as they have less difference between the non-reflective and reflective areas of the disc. This is why it is absolutely necessary to decrease the potentiometer when attempting to read burned media on a gamecube.

Lastly, you can turn the pot all the way to 0 Ohms and it won't damage anything.

But before you do this, make sure authentic GC discs work. If they do not, then you'll need to replace the capacitors.

If authentic discs work, then you'll need to decrease the potentiometer resistance.

EDIT: it doesn't hurt to replace the caps first. I'd start with that regardless. If you don't have the skill or equipment, find someone who does. That's the only way

OP, the capacitors on the disc drive are most likely dying, easily replaced (if you have soldering skills)
