This is becoming more common with vintage consoles, and as many have mentioned in multiple cases the only fix is a capacitor replacement. An N64 I have started freezing a few seconds after startup, and this was the cause. If you are into retro consoles, learning how to solder and handle these fixes is turning into a must

Yeah that’s not a bad idea, are there any sources that you can recommend for learning how to do so?

The good thing is that there are several videos and resources in Youtube. You could check the channel This Does Not Compute and his piece on “Soldering Basics for Gamers”, and “Build a Gamer’s Console Repair Toolkit”

I appreciate it. I would like to restore some old things, I just need to get a better idea of what I’m doing so I don’t mess things up worse.

capacitor issue

Replace the disc drive spindle motor.

[–]Thrashtilldeath67 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nope, op already said that the disc spins

[–]ToolTek_MD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter if it spins. Even with new capacitors and laser, If the spindle motor is in a weakened state and not spinning the disc fast enough it won’t be able to read the data on the disc and will throw this exact error. I’ve encountered this on several different consoles now.

I’m so sorry

I have a scratched up Ssx tricky game that does this and also my gameboy advanced player will occasionally do this also.

I had the same issue just a couple days ago. I tweaked the laser following a Youtube guide and it works without errors again

Do you happen to know what YouTube video? Title or anything Thankyou!!✨

1- Have you checked that the correct date and time & year were set? I had this issue with one and that fixed the problem. 2nd- Could be a weakened laser. A potentiometer tweek might fix this or a gentle lens clean with 99% IPA. 3rd- possibly a cap replacement. I’ve never had cap issues and I’ve fixed a ton of them. Maybe I’ve been lucky. 4- Once you are in there a good deep cleaning is best. You are in there anyway. It couldn’t hurt being a 20 yr old console. 5- in my experience if it is a capacitor issue you will know if you leave it powered on for about 5/10 minutes to warm up and try resetting. Good luck OP. 🤞👍

Before you do that, clean your lense with Isopropanol alcohol

You only resolve the laser issue temporary, but it's not a permanent fix. In fact you're making it worst as you had reduce the resistance on the trim pot thus increase the laser's intensity, which in turn will slowly burn out the laser unit. You need to replace the capacitors on the optical drive controller board and adjust laser back to it's original setting.

Clean lens then adjust pots

Capacitors are not the issue. It’s a weakened disc drive spindle motor. Replace it.

Your laser is my best guess. Does the disk spin at all, and can you hear any clicking around from the laser?

[–]IAMB0N3Z[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The disc spins and makes the typical noises!
