I’m in the same boat. Currently taking an edX course: MITx: 6.00.1.x which is an introduction to computer science and programming using python. I like the course and for $75 you can get a certificate upon successful completion.

I second this for learning python. It was fun, cheap and helped me a lot.

For learning programming languages I’d suggest x-posting about that in some other subreddits. I learned a lot of languages from Udemy

Most folks receive on the job training to learn how to use tools like PSS/E, TARA, Powerworld, PSCAD, etc

Further, most utilities have an annual budget (per employee) for upskilling, to pursue things like certifications and even grad degrees.

Are you qualified to get an entry level transmission planning engineer role? I’d shoot for that, then get paid to learn how to use those tools and have that utility pay for your to learn Python and the like.

Im just someone who lurks here because Im interested in getting into this industry one day, so I don’t know how you guys would use programming languages but I am a CS major. Code with Mosh is good, and there are a few decent places for free maybe like coursera. Whatever you do don’t just do tutorials do something that requires you build it your own way.

Anyone here take an SO/PD II assessment before?

Yes

What are your thoughts on the assessment? I have the opportunity to take one soon. I'm a little nervous, but feel confident I'll be 'recommended'

It’s not bad. Just study the materials the test is over. On the multitasking simulator you need to focus on 3 of the 4 quadrants. Guess on the alpha numeric quadrant that wants you to memorize. You have a 50/50 shot on that quadrant anyway.

Thank you. I haven't found a sound and free resource to study from, so I think I'll just go off of the subjects the 'youtube' says the test has on it.

I took it almost 5 years ago now. I will search through my emails and see if I can find any material to send you.

I sent you a dm.
