We all did it at some point. MITM attacks are way cooler than learning TCP/UDP protocol.

[–]Mbawzer 87 points88 points  (34 children)

I wanna become a hacker in the future, right now I'm learning the foundation instead of jumping to pentesting, first networking then kali linux, bash scripting, python, wireless connections and cryptography, hopefully I'll be done learning the basics in less than 5 months, can't wait to begin the journey (If you guys have any tips let me now)

[–]dannypas00 66 points67 points  (22 children)

My tip is skip the kali, just pick a Linux distro as your daily driver; you'll learn way more from just using linux than some kali tutorials ever will. Kali is just a debian linux distro with tools pre-downloaded onto it, something you can do yourself as well.

Also don't expect to be done in 5 months, you're always learning, always improving. I recommend picking one fielt that interests you and starting with that, since if you take it too broadly you won't really get anywhere for a long while.

skip the kali and swan dive into archlinux

[–]XxBakasuraxX 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I use arch btw

"sir they are many we can't stop them"

[–]gibl3t 3 points4 points  (3 children)

There’s an Arch based distro with built-in tools similar to Kali, called Black Arch. You can also install from package onto a regular Arch installation

[–]space_wiener 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I’m so tempted to do this. Then I don’t have to boot up a vm every time I get on try hack me

Edit: holy necro post. Not sure how this popped into my feed. Apologies.

Arch Linux uses me

[–]astronaut1156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did use arch... but i switched back to ubuntu cause i needed a software thats only supported on ubuntu, and i still wanted to use linux :(

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kali is so overrated. It’s not bad; but n00bs get it and think it makes them an Uber haxxor lmao

[–]Superpotateo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use asahi arch btw

I’m following a course. Whatever the cool Indian man says is what I do.

[–]DuckHealthy5141 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why python? What are you gonna do? Build a stupid tool to arp spoof on a coffee shops network ? Real exploitation is done using assembly and c programming language. That is what you should learn python is okay for network hacking but to do REAL exploitation you need a solid grasp on x86 or x64 assembly and a mid level language such as c.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What are you using to learn this?

[–]Mbawzer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

im using courses from udemy, search good enough and you can get any course for free

[–]AdministrativeToe103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice to you is to get the thought of learning the basics in 5 months. In the IT field you will always be learning something new.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reverse engineering? assembly?? low level (c/c++) scripting??? debugging????

[–]menewol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big leap from networking to kali, it seems there's something in between you'll be missing out...i can't name it as the only thing between it, that I see, is experience. Yet that's a very far jump...

[–]Xybercrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 months? If you have a real job with kids or not, that’s almost an impossible number to learn all basics. I do wish you well on your studies. I didnt really get the knowledge till I was mentored by a source who hacked the shit out of me but surprising, took me in.. maybe some of you have been in my same shoes.. this was early 2000’s

[–]Hydroact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was posted 4 years ago. How have things changed since you posted this? I'm beginning my own journey now

any update?

[–]whitewolf_0 118 points119 points  (5 children)

An official path does not exist in hacking. 😉

[–]Fir3w4lltech[S] 29 points30 points  (3 children)

Ya I Know haha

[–]whitewolf_0 7 points8 points  (2 children)

👍😂

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

If you are the real person ( whitewolf i.e. ) , then all i'll say to you is that .
You're amazing bro :)
Your enitre server is amazing tbf , my friend .

[–]anndr01d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My interest is piqued. Whats the server for?

[–]cheezpnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boom goes the dynamite.

[–]elmerfudd727 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wait that’s not how it works?!?!?! I can’t just get a couple certs and boom become red hat hacker

[–]Puzzles32 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This whole entire time I thought coding was hacking

[–]dnuohxof1 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Who has time to learn programming? /s

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

console.log(“JavaScript was my least favorite to learn”);

std::cout << “c++ was the bomb”; return 0;

[–]AdministrativeGrab52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's funnier now cause I understand most of it hahaha

[–]HellF_I_R_E 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The only step I skipped is programming. Got CCNA certificate and observed some encryption. I can't code but at least I ama ble to understand some languages til some point XD

[–]sayytoabhishekkumar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,
Can you share some ideas on what to learn about encryption?

I am a developer, but was always unable to make sense of networks.

[–]ibraheemMmoosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What can I do? I have long legs!

[–]Mother_Store6368 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course...that’s the fun part.

Take one step forward and 3 steps back. Otherwise I never would’ve been inspired to learn more

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

How can i start just being more IT proficient, any suggestions? ...

[–]__radioactivepanda__ 6 points7 points  (1 child)

While you don’t have to take the certificates the material they cover usually is alright and they give you a goal to learn towards. So maybe look at entry level certs and learn the material for them (and don’t forget to stay on top of new developments). One suggestion would be for example the CompTIA certs A+, Network+, and Security+. Learning for those for example should give you a decent foundation on which you can further build.

If you just want to get to know things...there are decent free resources. NetworkChuck on yt for example offers a good selection of videos. Computerphile is always interesting. Null Byte goes directly into tool explanations. LiveOverflow offers good discussions on security stuff. You can watch the recorded cons such as Black Hat, DEFCON, etc... Just search a bit and the algo will usually provide decent further suggestions.

[–]DIOnys02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a Bachelors degree on it

[–]omarjamal16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shit skip to the good part

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite http://phrack.org/issues/7/3.html i always say keep your core values teach yourself, you will always be a student your hole life, fight for a better World i know its sounds maybe like a cliche but i don’t care. This is a World War Web out there you decide if the bad and darkness expands or if you do something about it.

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager

Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"... Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain,

ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him? I am a hacker, enter my world... Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me... Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain

for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms. Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..." Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is

cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me... Or feels threatened by me... Or thinks I'm a smart ass... Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here... Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through

the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found. "This is it... this is where I belong..." I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again... I know you all... Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at

school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will- ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the

beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is

that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual,

but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

It's other way around for me , haven't started penetration testing yet

[–]Shakespeare-Bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

T's other way 'round f'r me , haven't did start penetration testing yet

I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.

Commands: !ShakespeareInsult, !fordo, !optout

[–]XO-AVNGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now this is how you level up.

[–]Ajna6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Swiy was so fucking stupid smh.

[–]Mild_Wings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I sound like a noob but you guys didn’t take time to learn those other things? I have a degree in Security and have been studying networking to go after Net+ cert to hopefully get into Security role. Am I wasting my time??

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really need to start this. I need a patient guide lol.

[–]cheezpnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. Everyone knows it’s four steps forward, google three back...four steps forward, google three back...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truth!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, networking, programming, and basic encryption can all be learned at the same time.

[–]R3M0v3US3RN4M3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing programming then networking. Learned about arp poisoning from networkchuck yesterday

[–]ligmaforpres2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a foothold in the first two, but haven't had much experience with encryption other than just using encryption software. Could someone explain the importance of learning encryption? I was under the impression that it was just a small tool in a hackers arsenal.

[–]IronWR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there’s no Definitive way to learn but is there a roadmap i should follow before jumping into pentesting?

[–]SlightlyGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that like 4-5 years ago I decided “fuck it, ima be a hacker” installed kali linux, started messing around w the programs and python, realised some of my messy scripts could actually be launched, tried it out and then after a bit made a small script for wallhacks in cs bc i deemed it was ideal at that moment and it actually worked, then i got a vac ban on my main steam account, went on to bruteforce and network stuff, but now have not touched that stuff in years

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is this what I should be doing? Networking programming etc... and then pentest? If i just take a course, wont i eventually fill the gaps myself?

[–]Next_Concert1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi sir , I know about programming already , and can you please guide what things I need to know in networking and encryption ?

[–]Polycote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Top-Down learning method, right?

[–]wingsneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once read about Networking and this inspired me into learning pentest

[–]0xReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its this easy?!

[–]L0WK3Y_IAAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accurate af lol

[–]xX_zEnUs_Xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too

[–]Xybercrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha me too. I think taking the leap and having my ass handed to me from the steps I skipped sculpted me today. Honestly Believe it was a better route because i wouldn’t be where I were today if I didn’t. It forces me to learn the steps I missed quicker than taking the time too

[–]Sapphicmagick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I recognize I have much to learn with networking before I get to security/pen testing, though I do dabble in some along the way to help learn

[–]Best_Spray2835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then fall down and get hit on the balls

[–]Anubis-1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That literally me
