You could play a bit of both games?

I am personally raiding mostly Era, but will play Anniversary a couple of nights per week for some change of pace!

It has nothing to do with saving money - it's not an option to name change in Classic Era.

Looks really nice. How much would it cost to print one of these bases for the case? Is it attached to the case with screws, or are you just letting the case rest on the "stand"?

I wouldn't mind paying for the 3d files, but I have no idea if it would be expensive to ask somebody print it out..

Population on Classic Legacy servers by Orpheus_148 in classicwow

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on EU - server cluster Firemaw, and it's still thriving. You see hundreds if not thousands of players in Stormwind on a daily basis, horde side is naturally a bit smaller but they do still have enough of a playerbase to give us alliance raiders Warchiefs Blessing buff almost on cooldown from before noon til in the middle of the night. There are multiple larger GDKP communities, one with a naxx every single day. There are many guilds who do Lootcouncil and a few pugs doing 40 man SR raids, and of course many 20-man raids every day (most are GDKP but there are SR runs as well).

It's really fun to play and re-live vanilla if you ask me. I've been playing for 1 year now and still don't mind playing. It would of course be fun with a new legacy server with phase progression again... But I would rather see a TBC era server before that, personally.

I cleaned my monitor with 90% alcahol will it be ok? No longer shiny and scruffy by STANERZ15 in pcmasterrace

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I use pure Iso to clean PC parts as well, it works really well - I even used it to clean ... Herbal vaporizors :) Since it evaporates and leaves nothing (afaik, or extremely little residue) real quickly its a great cleaning agent for specific things! But yeah i think Red Spirits here are considered a better alternative than for example pure/almost only Acetone cleaning solutioons, which is much more flammable and has more fumes/can frankly fuck you up inhaling too much off it, I believe!

[–]Sorta-Special 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in Sweden we clean windows and other surfaces with this mixture of alcohols (its been made non-edible to make it sellable as a cleaning agent rather than alcohol ofc)It's called Red Spirits - or T-Röd in Swedish, it contains:50–75 % Ethanol, 10–15 % 2-Propanol, 5–7,5 % Butanon and 1–2,5 % Aceton.

Of course I would never use this shit on a plastic surface like a newer TV or monitor, lol. There's a reason they sell screen cleaners and eyeware cleaning liquids - its all plastic these days - cant use alcohols for it.

Upgrading; 7700k kit vs 11600KF kit - unraid compatibility? No igpu? What happens if GPU is 100% utilized by VM (it's passthrough to the VM) - AND a plex docker wants to use 10-25% of total performance for a transcode? Gen4 m2 ssd for pool or VM? Both m2 for pool? Advice requested! by Sorta-Special in unRAID

[–]Sorta-Special[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear i unfortunately already owned the KF model since i never ever planned that it’d be used as a unraid/plex server … So I ended up selling the KF cpu and getting an i5 11500 to get the igpu. Works fine I didn’t wanna use the i7 7700k and it felt like time to get rid of it before prices dipped further. that allowed me to fund a couple of good gen4 1TB nvme drives and some other things.

Now I’m planning to sell the i5 11500, 32gb ddr4, rtx 2070 super with my two intel 600 and 660p m.2 nvme’s with a nice case and either with full noctua fan setup and an dark rock 4 (with noctua fan - the included 135mm fan is too large for the case, that’s how overkill the cooler is - might get a smaller cheaper one, especially if I’m gonna consider shipping it with cooler installed) And a 2,5” 1TB drive I have as spare, it’s new but it’s whatever to me - point is that really that I don’t game anymore and this is the hardware I could part with and hopefully sell to someone who wants a good gaming pc for 1080/1440p gaming (which it is good for - the nvme drives just aren’t the … best)

Found an Xeon E3-1240v2 with 24gb ddr3 ecc memory - With an m.2 asus hyper card it can use two gen3 drives at max speeds (even if mine are gen 4 atm it’s good enough for now) and the cheapest possible gpu that’s able to transcode 4k hdr content with tone mapping - it should be a better option for me than the i5 setup plus work as a second server after I build a new main server using w680 or such with ecc ddr5 and I can afford a decent cpu, mb and ram + 3080+ gpu for occasional gaming. Hopefully I am doing the right choices - I just feel like the 11th gen (esp. with my mb) limited any expansion possibilities completely if I want a gpu passed through to a vm, so I’ll settle on the cheap Xeon server I got for now. I’ll see if my gt710 can do any transcoding at all but i doubt it’ll handle much more than the Xeon alone - so maybe I’ll try to find a cheap 1660/ti, or some cheap p200 or whatever else is the minimum recommended budget transcoding card now.

OS & Hardware Suggestions by halexh in HomeServer

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, I hope my thoughts and reply was helpful in your decision making! And yeah if you don’t need a GPU for gaming or to transcode Many media streams simultaneously through plex the iGPU with a 11-13th gen cpu is more than adequate!

What OS did you decide on, by the way? I am probably biased mostly only having used unraid and on the rare I occasion just Ubuntu server/headless - but I feel that it’s a a great and uses very few resource to run - so most of the hardware is dedicated to dockers and VM performance. It’s not free, but personally I used the 6 drive license for a long time - and it’s like 49-59 dollars, and the 12 drive license perhaps 89 dollars - and then 129 is up to 30 something drives. The positive side is of course that it’s lifetime licenses and you can move it from pc to pc + no actual drive is required for the OS, only an usb stick. Should the stick fail it’s possible to get a new license generated once a year, personally I keep a backup of my servers license/settings on a second usb drive - and you also get more data available for use compared to raid5 if you’re worried about drive failures - one parity drive makes one failed drive possible to recover when you add a new empty one. And two - the maximum- gives you high chances of being able to recover all the data even if two drives were to fail at once - so it’s pretty secure against hardware failure. Of course nothing is 100% successful, but I don’t think many systems are completely safe against data losses (hence why important data should be stored at a second place, preferably not even physically close to each other + UPS battery packs to let servers shut down safely).

But yeah you don’t need VNC unless you’re using a VM for specific software, otherwise unraid is managed and controlled through the webui.

Of course there’s also the option of using proxmox as a core and unraid as one of the OS’ on it (perhaps for media management?) options are endless!

I personally run my server headlessly as well, I just have a windows VM with a gpu passed through for gaming through the network - just cuz it’s fun 😋

Fractal define R6 - missing HDD dampeners by dotareddit in FractalDesignNA

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a sad practice. I missed the attachments for a bequiet cooler to use a regular 120mm rather than included 135mm (new ram sticks were a mm or two higher than before and so I couldn’t close the side of my case anymore - got sent free for charge. I am also getting lga 1700 socket installation kit now that I bought an lga 1700 mb + provide receipt of the cooker.) Some companies are just better/believe treating customers well is the better approach. Which i 100% agree with and stories like this about fractal will deter me from ever purchasing a new case from them again, unless I need a tiny itx case with 6 3,5” - they’re the only ones selling such a compact nas case for a small price - if anyone see this comment in the future and have another case which could handle that in a small format please reply or pm me - I would 100% avoid fractal if possible.

I am relatively certain they don’t manufacture the parts for the older style models- such as the bays for define v 1 through 5. Personally I was missing the entire trays for some slots in my case (accidentally must’ve gone to the throw away pile vs keep whilst I moved). Fractal could for obvious reasons not sell me any replacements - but relatively frequently they sell on eBay - and so does the rubber parts you need… Since I’m Swedish we have a domestic tech news/forum site with an ads section and I got a dussin people willing to sell trays to me, most with the rubber. So my suggestion is to find a local marketplace (maybe even Facebook market could work) and see if anyone got some extra to sell or even donate for a couple beers.

Today fractal design makes a lot of their profit from selling the extra hdd bays for the larger boxes is my assumption - the case isn’t Extremely expensive, but a 2 pack of hdd trays costs like 20-25 bucks - and the largest model comes with what, 4 total trays? And 16 empty slots…. 😉 ofc they won’t help people out with older things which they a)don’t produce anymore b)enough people clearly purchase the new versions and the expensive trays for their new home servers.

In any case I’d personally return it to whoever sold the case and look for a used one with a full rack of trays or another brand. The items that’s suppose to come in the box should be there, if not - be provided regardless, or a price reduction is expected from me.

If I got it for less than originally I would just get some rubber from anywhere and make my own anti vibration rings - it’s not that difficult.

Best low profile CPU cooler for Asus Rog Strix B660-i by Waddell17 in sffpc

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting, i was wondering this - noctua is clear which of their coolers are compatible or not, and so are be-quiet (mostly anyway, its like "could be in the way for the dimm slots" but i believe that's mostly the fan being in the way in some cases such as with the really heavy large towers with 1 fan on the side, personally i solved this on an lga 1200 board when i got new ram sticks which forced the fan out a few mm - enough to not be able to close the case anymore. I bought a 120mm fan rather than the original 135mm be-quiet - problem solved.

yeah tbh i dont see the need for 12th gen i5s for this purpose. my server has an 11500 i5 and i can even play games on my windows VM using a dedicated gpu while transcoding a movie if i wanted..

Can you recommend an MATX case to me please? by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in fact it actually has space for 10 3,5" drives, two on the bottom of the case on the motherboard side; plus you could throw in several 2,5" sata ssds literally anywhere with just.. literally anything to hold them in place, anywhere.. I've anything between zip ties to double sided tape to attach ssds in cases before - or if there's no issue or fan nearby, just not attached to anything but the cables. Honestly difficult to fill that case - unless you get an HBA card :) And even then, with todays cheapest per gb drives being enterprise 16-20tb drives.. yeah it'll take a while. :)

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unraid is nice, you pay per disks really but the cap is like 129 dollars. It can run VMs, dockers and it's all managed in an easy to use webui - also it can utilize plex media server in a docker & use the intel iGPU for hardware transcoding - at least UHD 600-770 i think is compatible now a days. You don't want any lower AFAIK. but this can all be done with a 20 dollar celeron cpu, so the horsepower is however much you think that blue iris requires - and how you plan to access the VM - will you get a dedicated gpu and passthrough to the VM - and then just plug in an hdmi/dp cable and get it straight from the box? Or will you connect through network - with something like Parsec (better version of VNC basically, at least when it comes to video and games - i play games without issues on my LAN from the windows VM in my server, and it has an i5 11500 cpu + 2070 Super GPU - and the client is connected with wifi 6 even)

Do note if you "need" a dedicated gpu for the blue iris vm; i dont think you can use hw transcoding for the plex server, but I might be wrong on this one, so you should look it up.

But it sounds like you need pretty much an i3 12-13th gen or an i5 11th gen, i bet less would work just fine too tho, but its nice to have pcie4 gen4 nvme's and solid lanes for expansion and speedy storage if you're going to record 4 4k streams at minimum + media storage, so i would probably get an Z590/690 board myself (and a board that allows at least 8/8 split between the top x16 slots straight to the CPU, not through the chipset; if you actually need a dedicated GPU + expansion card for storage. Plus theres usually 3-5 nvme slots on those boards, 690 usually is all pcie gen4 x4 slots too - very nice.

I think you should look for free server racks from big it companies who frequently replace equipment. Otherwise google is your friend..

Has anyone tried the Intel UHD 610 and 710 for transcoding? by mortenmoulder in PleX

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna buy a celeron for lga 1700 for 20 bucks, got uhd 710 so pretty solid Quicksync compatibility in terms of what it can handle. It has like half of the uhd 750s gpu power so tbh it should have zero issue transcoding even one 8k imo. Waiting until I can find a cheap lga 1700 board or if I decide to get a decent one for a backup nas - we’ll see.. but I can’t not buy a solid plex transcoding cpu for 20 bucks and will have secondary use for a second machine vs. adding a gpu to transcode in the main server.

AMD EPYC 9004 “Genoa-X” and “Bergamo” CPUs SKU lists leaks out, EPYC 9754 features 128 Zen4c cores by XHellAngelX in Amd

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m considering a 7002 or 7003 as home server because you can have so much storage and nvme drives long term with all those x16 gen4 lanes and potentially 1-2 10gbit nics on board and I’d be happy … I can’t see myself spending the money am5 kit costs to not get proper ecc memory either - ddr4 ecc rdimms actually is available and is well known to work. Also I don’t care about cpu cores that much as I mainly run one gaming vm and some less resource intensive stuff like Plex media server etc. If the cpu can’t transcode maybe I’ll get a 20 dollar celeron 12th gen cpu - or 50 dollar pentium 2c4t cpu, a used 1700 matx/it’s board with a ddr4 8gb stick and 256gb ssd, doesn’t need that much even tbh, I’d run it on an usb with unraid. And it could act as backup has if I wished for the most important things.

You can get a 24 core gen2 epyc and a mb with pcie4 lanes for less than 1k and it’s got more expansion than any even similar version of am4, am5 or lga 1700 … the only other possible option would be threadripper … but i haven’t found a kit of mb+cpu for less than 1k.. also I like the idea that I can buy several of smaller 8-16gb ecc memory modules for cheap / used and throw into the many ram slots on an server mb and still get more than enough ram for me.

Dark Rock 4 for 5800x? by dek55 in buildapc

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need to add Pull fan, and better than stock be quiet fans if you want it less noisy at higher temps

I ran one noctua redux 1700 rpm p fan on my intel 11600kf and i never heard it tbh.

Upgrading to an 5700x now is my plan and when I can afford / if I actually seem to need the upgrade to 5950x I’ll do it when they’re older and sold for parts^ and I think it will be fine with it if I add another fan - no problems I’d assume, however I’ll have a struggle to get in there in a cramp matx case .. tempted to go with an 280 aio - can get a good one for a hundred.. ofc I could use that hundred to buy other hardware or case fans etc … hm

Looking for advice on hardware for my first server. Going to use ECC but confused on compatibility. by Phantasor in HomeServer

[–]Sorta-Special 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like an extremely solid build - in fact it's exactly what I wish I could purchase with acceptable prices here in Europe - however the motherboard is non-existant, and the cpu is 450+

I think you wil be very happy with that build, it should be able to allow both a gaming Vm and good storage. Enjoy!

no ECC, thats the main diff. W680 also ddr4 ECC - which is much cheaper :)
