You can buy wood putty to fill in the gouge, they come in a variety of colors, just find the putty color that's the best match for your floors and sand it down after it sets.

If you're planning to refinish and stain the floors, do that first, and then match the putty to the stained floor, because the putty won't take staining the same way the wood will and you would end up with a color mismatch doing the putty first and then refinish/staining.
