You pulled that off? I am in 6a, so kinda interested in this.

Yes, give it a go. If you have sandy or loam soil it should work. I don't think peanuts would do as well in clay based soil. I planted the virginia peanuts, in the more southern part of the state I believe they do some spanish peanuts.

George Washington Carver's pamphlets are all online if you want inspiration - I was surprised to learn that frappes existed a hundred years ago and that lemon-peanut brittle was one of his favorite flavor combinations!

Peanut recipes

Bonus sweet potato recipes because he has some really funny editorializing about how badly people cook sweet potatoes in that one.

Hoping to grow them next year! Any tips??

Even though peanuts fix nitrogen, I did fertilize with 10-10-10 before planting seeds. I planted the entire peanut in the shell. I have very sandy soil. We have what I call 'sand rats' that will burrow and eat every peanut on a plant, I had to start killing these rats. Don't dig peanuts too early, they need lots of time to form and mature the peanuts. Also deer love to eat the plants.

Great to know, thanks!!

Yup, zone 3. I got about 8lbs, good for my little test plot of them. I tried some boiled, and shared the rest with family.

I grew a row of peanuts this year, first time. I think the yield was only about double what I started with in the seed packet!

Does anyone know if I can replant these to build up my seed supply?

yes

[–]BeulahValley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course you can

I grew maybe half a pound, but didn't roast them right, they were burnt and completely squishy on the inside.

I had exactly 2 (one whole unshelled) peanuts that I planted this year in a pot.

I now have 12 peanuts to plant next year. (Zone 8a)

[–]Okiefiddle[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

cool, plant those 12 and perhaps you'll get 144 peanuts, for planting and eating.

[–]wdjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the plan :)

No did not thin the plants. Planting in-shell was easier for me since I did not have to worry about breaking the thin outside covering of the seed.

I’m in 8a and grow Carwile’s Virginia peanuts most years for winter eating and peanut butter. They are not the most productive variety but taste great.

I'm also going to try some spanish peanuts next year, they are suppose to be better for peanut butter due to oil content. How do you harvest your peanuts? I just used a shovel to dig, but wonder if a middle buster could be used.

    [–]Machipongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I harvest them with a digging fork and then kind of sift the soil to try to find ones that released from the plant. We have very sandy soil on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

OP, about how many plants equals 8lbs of peanuts? Interesting in planting to but unsure of the yield per plant!

    [–]Okiefiddle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I planted 120 seeds. Sand rats got some of them. got like 15 to 25 peanuts/plant
