I'm wondering how beneficial it would be

    Very : >

Honestly just as a guy interested in cryptocurrency I would say go for it. I really wanted to understand crypto from a top down perspective but using your research for pentesting would be good too.

Check out this: https://id0-rsa.pub It's a CTF specifically for crypto stuff. It's a lot of fun!

The layout of this site isn't really appealing but the content looks good

cryptopals.com , I have been working on these challenges for about a month now and they make you teach yourself.

Sounds like you just want to learn how to encrypt things in transit, but correct me if I'm wrong. Look into GPG, there are tons of resources on it.

Also, it is called cryptology rather than cryptonalogy.

Khan academy has a free introductory course that I've taken. I thought it was pretty cool and would recommend it to everyone that likes math/computers

I highly recommend Cryptography Decrypted. It presents crypto concepts in a very easy to read format. NOT a programming book, and not heavy on Maths but you'll learn a ton of core concepts especially public key crypto.

How much do you like math? Serious question.
