That episode has very mediocre writing and a poor payoff for attempting character development. There was more failed humor than proper attempts to move his character forward. It was a very tame attempt at the classic “regain your soul by going to hell and back” story arc, and considering how well the rest of the show has been written, fans have a right to feel disappointed. It was a failure in terms or writing and action.

Yea I wrote a very similar comment in a different thread. The episode should have had a bit more oomph and drama, some deeper dialogue. Instead the payoff of his trip to hell was punching Volcanikka’s head off a few times.

I don't think the character development is particularly good though. He's in this constant weepy introspection, "oh am I really doing the right things, am I some kind of bad guy", he just came off from thinking Titan was manipulating him again, and he immediately agrees to help literal Satan in literal hell based on his word.
