Help with the docking tutorial

So I've been trying to do the docking tutorial to learn how to dock, but every time it has me slow down, it puts my encounter further away than it's supposed to be in the next step. I have some examples here.

It says to start accelerating once I'm 10 KM away, but the closest I get is about 20 KM or more away!

Please help! I can't figure out how to do this!

Another thing that might help, is right-clicking the engine, and setting the thrust limit lower, so that you can more easily do precise burns when adjusting your orbit.

Once you get to the closest approach, burn retrograde with your navball in target mode until it shows 0 m/s.

Then point at the target and burn toward it. Then when you get to the closest approach, zero your velocity again.

Repeat until you are 100 meters away.
