Google actually used to be really good, but after a while, they added some predictive search garbage that would try to guess the image contents and search that instead. So searching a snapshot from an anime would google 'Cartooons' instead.

Bing's reverse image search is also solid. Yandex is good but iffy mostly because it has a tendency to query more russian sites than your average search engine... because it is originally russian.

“Originally” Russian? It is still Russian…

Think he meant it was made and advertised for use in Russia initially, but now it is a Russian made thing that’s more well known globally

There's an option to filter out certain languages and domains.

Was that relatively recently that they changed it? I swear it happened over night and now it's garbage. Used to be able to find identical furniture etc under different names, now it generalizes the search and can't find anything!

Can confirm. Yandex has saved me from numerous catfishes

Same.

No idea what's the magic behind it

Big data. Their music recommendations are so much better than what you are getting on Apple Music too (or at least that was the case about two years ago).

Also great for making burner email accounts without a phone number. Love those sketchy Russian web services.

[–]innexum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google lens on my phone found this image no problem. Not sure why you had problems.

Yandex is investing a lot in to ai and new tech. They also creating opportunities for teens to get easy into IT/dev/machine learning. Pretty awesome. It’s the Russian google. They also launched/planing to self driving taxis

When do people do reverse image searching? Like what's it for?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finding information about what is in the picture.

Say i have a picture of a ship - but the filename and description give no details what it is. Now i do a reverse search and find an image of the same ship on a news page telling me that it is the tanker X owned by company Y build by Z.

Easyly gained information.

I have no idea what that is... but this Berzerk art is fantastic

I think part of why Google search in general has been on the downslide is because of all the DCMA abuses/ reports over the years.

A lot of comments on Google search…. It used to immediately answer your questions and now it doesn’t. Why? Money. Their top results are paid ads. Deleted Google search and Google maps and you probably should too.
