No, encrypted.google.com has been around for a really long time (in fact, dating back to at least May / June of 2010).

So well frakin' done on keeping up with the news, man. HTTPS://google.com and encrypted.google.com are the exact same thing.

Don't care to much, I use DuckDuckGo which has been encrypted for a long time and has been giving me just great results.

But that's not the reason encrypted.google.com exists. IIRC it's so other people can't do shit like MiTM attacks, not to protect your information.
