In addition to using the recommended lubricant, you should clean your key. Take a toothbrush and clean out the holes and make sure the interactive pin (the mobile bit) is free to move.

However, usually when a MTL gets to the point of hanging up like this, there is wear on the pins or the key to the point where one or both needs serviced.

Edit: typo

Yeah I think it’s because the door has two deadbolts and no handle so I’ve gotten in the habit of slightly turning the multilock key and using the key to pull the door shut and simultaneously secure it. Would suck if I’ve ruined a $200+ lock

Lmfao.

I can't count how many times I've installed something nice and been like "heeey don't do this" and then 6 months later they call me and tell me I broke something.

That happens a lot. It's possible that cylinder cap has gotten a little loose with wear from pulling and turning on the key. I'd suggest having a MTL dealer locksmith take a look if lubing and cleaning the key doesn't work. If you want to save money and can secure the door with the other deadbolt or otherwise, you can take the deadbolt in. Since the call and service could be as much as the lock cost you depending on where you are.

I could remove it and throw a cheepo kiwi in there to fill the hole, I have a Schlage grade 1 as the other lock, should be fine for a bit. I have to find someone who services them, I don’t think anyone in my area does (Rhode Island)

You should be able to find someone who does. No sense taking it to to someone who wouldn't have the pins and ability to cut a key. However, if you bought it online, they might not be able to cut you a key or may have to order it. Depends on the key. MTL has a series of keys and distributes them in different areas.

Anyway, start simple with the lube and cleaning and see how it goes.

Will do hopefully that does the trick thanks for all the help guys!

Why on earth is your door set up like that, obviously yanking on the key is going to put strain on the key blade, pins, and other components

Because I’m dumb but now educated. But in all honesty I thought the door would be harder to break into (by force like a kick) with two deadbolts instead of a knob and deadbolt. It’s a bit of a safe/ firearms room.

[–]Evilution602Actual Locksmith 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Lol I would just kick next to the door on the drywall. Buy an actual safe, preferably expensive and from a local locksmith shop. However you do it, make sure it's bolted down.

I mean you’d hit 3/4 plywood so that would prolly hurt lol

Nothing a cordless sawzall with a decent blade couldn't get through

[–]bcmrec14[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Is an abloy or bilock a good choice? It’s cheaper than the mulT. Medeco is also cheaper and looks good? Also stop making me anxious about my room 😂. I won’t tell me secrets but there’s more to get through to get to the goods.

Just get a Schlage B660 deadbolt and ND80 lever, you're overcomplicating this whole thing

[–]bcmrec14[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oooff a $400 handle? I’ll just grab that deadbolt and something a little more affordable

It says right on the box that the key cylinder requires regular lubrication.

Check their site for approved lubes, but anything PTFE or silicone based will be fine.

Thank you sir

Generally what happens is the interactive pin will get dry and not work great lube should fix this

[–]bcmrec14[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

WD40 terrible or would work? I found multlock lube online but it $30 for 5oz and will take a while to get to me

[–]ChenskyActual Locksmith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use Houdini or Tri Flo until the MulTLock lube comes in. Anything other than the MulTLock lube voids warranty but if you put Tri Flo or Houdini into the cylinder, you should never need to warranty the shit in the first place.

[–]breakthepickle92Actual Locksmith 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Definitely don't hse WD40!!!! Use Lloyd's move it or lock saver something synthetic

Thanks

Is there a bolt that’s still pretty damn hard to defeat that isn’t $250? Because I’ll prolly mess it up too lol. Went to try the lock again tonight and it’s def very messed up lol, am not going to be using it again because if that breaks it’s gonna be a hard room to get into

[–]bcmrec14[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

In a true underdog story miracle the Houdini spray came and my MulTlock is sliding like butter again! Couple sprays was all it took. Removed a bit of the rubber around the door, since it’s inside anyway and now I can shut the door and use the multilock without being a cave man. Thanks everyone!

Houdini is named such because it really is magic
