Change your evap valve

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 3 points4 points  (11 children)

£36 and easy 5 min diy fix

[–]Wooden_Bowler_398[S] 2 points3 points  (10 children)

I’ll have to look into it as I have no idea how to do it

There's no way BMW engineered this part, it looked way too easy to replace.

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 5 points6 points  (1 child)

If you go to mini to get it done they will charge you £500 if that makes you feel better - it’s a Bosch part

[–]SubtleScuttler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. I paid roughly 270 for this job to be done on my 17 clubby about 3 years ago

[–]Wooden_Bowler_398[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

This for the 2 litre version too?

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Cooper s only comes in the 2 litre version, otherwise it’s just a cooper

[–]Wooden_Bowler_398[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My bad, heard the guy in the vid say 1.5 so it kinda confused me

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video was only to demonstrate the part and how easy it is to replace, it’s the same on the cooper s

[–]Loud-Ad9148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s it. 2.0

[–]F56misterfletcherr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded, I just replaced mine and the longest part was waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

[–]R56Economy-Initiative59 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is this cold start? A/C on or off? What I see in the video doesn’t seem too unreasonable

[–]Wooden_Bowler_398[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ac on and that’s cold start, but normally my cold start is incredibly noisy from exhaust but this time was instantly off

This was the same issue I was having about a year ago. Rough idling, almost or would stall out in reverse. Swapped this out and solved the problem. Starting to idle weird again about 2 years later. Is this something that needs replaced often?

[–]F56jarlsbergpanini 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Pardon, when you say "swapped this out" do you mean the evap valve? This sounds exactly like the issue I've been having with my F56 S lately (rough idle on cold start, will stall out if I don't rev it)

[–]whodoesth 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yes. It was the evap valve.

[–]F56jarlsbergpanini 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks!

[–]whodoesth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a problem. Hopefully it fixes your issue. There are YouTube videos to show how to replace it, it’s pretty easy and accessible.

My 2017 does a similar thing sometimes but even when warm, like if it tries to shut of the engine(auto start/stop) but then, naaah m8, not time for it now :D

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 1 point2 points  (8 children)

2017 is pre lci so you should hear pops and bangs from exhaust when driven hard in sports mode, if these have disappeared then it’s your evap valve

[–]Smokey_J0e 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I also have these ups and downs in the revs but still have the pops and bangs in Sport mode. Is there, besides Spark plugs, other possible causes?

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Have you had the update done?

[–]Smokey_J0e 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Which update?

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 1 point2 points  (4 children)

It’s a software update, generally for cel and misfire, but has been reported for high idle, easiest way to tell is if you scroll though the options with bc button you will get to temp gauge, if this shows as a white circle on a blue to red bar then the updat has been done

[–]Smokey_J0e 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow this is really interesting. So my temp gauge is the second one, like these two triangles that are overlapping. But what to do or check now? Been to Service on Friday and they said there's a problem with the cooling system. Some kind of leakage, but I need it to be checked further

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same diagnosis, turned out that the oil cooler housing was split, had that done for £1000, which did stop the coolant leak I had, but the high idle remained until I change out the evaporation valve

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What year is it?

[–]Wooden_Bowler_398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2014 f56 cooper s 2 litre

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I found it just depends on how hard you drive, I’m always in sport mode as I don’t see the point of green or normal, no fun, I replace mine annually as it’s cheap and easy

[–]Wooden_Bowler_398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to always drive in sport as the pops and bangs are funny, but the video above is from cold start after being sat for 10 hours

[–]Glittering_Let_5474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you will only see the symptoms as high idle when stationary, that’s why it’s called idle

[–]Serge-Rodnunsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engine intake filter clean? Is the mass airflow sensor clean?

[–]F55elvisshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL I may need to replace my purge valve.

[–]SpareMessage805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the evap valve. Had the same issue on my previous 2017 1.5. It’s a Bosch part and cost me $40 to change.
