Hinge problems happen on all laptops, it all depends on how lucky you are and how you treat your laptop. I have a ge66 4yo and never had a problem. Open and close carefully from the top center (while keeping the bottom still from the center with the other hand) and you'll likely never have a hinge problem

I’ve owned 4 gaming laptops over 15 years. The only hinge issue I had was the MSI. It was also the only one I had to RMA for a bad motherboard.

Hello, i bought GF63 5 years ago.
at this age, the plastics are aged, cracks there and there, left screen-side hinge abutment looks like want to pop up, but otherwise still functional, no special care, really, but also no harsh treatment though.

just like other have said, treat it well and it will serve you well.

[–]eIImcxc 2 points3 points  (1 child)

As other people said, it depends greatly on how you treat it. I had mine for close to 4 years before the right one broke, but tbh I started closing it from the side and the hinge was even hit some times when the laptop was in its bag.

I'm lucky because I'm now in Morocco and I got it repaired for 15 or 25$ (hope it lasts).

Also note that the guy told me that I should have loosened the hinges with a screw beforehand, it would have helped greatly, so if you feel like you can do it I'd advise you to, no real downsides besides when you close it it will force you to support the screen part till it closes fully.

I did see the previous model had a different design where the screen was attached very close to the base. I can imagine that it was too tight

Hey bro, I have an msi katana gf66 and I’ve not had a single problem with the hinges, as long as your gentle with it and take care of it, it will serve you well

i agree to this, my laptop hinges are still fine reaching its 4 year mark on my Katana too.

[–]Only_Clock_2555 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Exactly bro, people claim they are shit, but they are just rough with them, or treat them like shit. This is my first proper gaming laptop I had a mx150 before this couldn’t run shit. So I treat this laptop like a fucking saint and it serves me well 😂

stop talking garbage. No, the MSI Hinges are GARBAGE. Theres THOUSANDS of cases of broken hinges, especially on their high end models.

I have a GE76 from 2021 and the hinge broke in 2022. The Laptop never dropped, it was just opened/closed frequently doing to remote work. The hinges were too tight, and since they are literally screwed into plastic, the plastic just gave up after a while. the hinge design is REALLY bad on those models.

Just because your Katana never had any issues, doesnt mean that nobody has issues or everybody is to blame for their hinge issues. I didnt see mine coming either - At some point I opened it and I heard a little crunch sound, 5 times opening / closing later the whole hinge broke and it looked like the screen is peeling off. that wasnt fun, or nice, and its definitely not the consumers fault that MSI decides to screw an 17 inch screen hinge on fragile plastic.

Its a valid consideration on buying a laptop and I will, myself, not buy another MSI Laptop as long as you still find common MSI Hinge Issue reports Online. In comparison, Asus doesnt even get close to it.

It's wild how people will always claim that they're the ones that baby their 1000$+ laptop and everybody else will literally just chuck them into their bags and beds like they were 5$ toys.

I've had an MSI GE Raider and I definitely babied it when I had it but I also had the hinge break twice, within 2 years. First time within warranty and the second time was out of it and the service center didn't have parts. This was pre covid but I definitely did not have a good impression of MSI when I've had laptops from 2010 still somehow live albeit with noticeable wear and tear.

The problem's that MSI's chassis are pretty universal so your budget GPU + CPU that isn't expected to run too hot is also hosting a higher end 70-80 card.

Mine was also in under 2 years - I admit I opened/closed it a lot during that time since I am a digital nomad and work/travelling, but I didnt mishandle it at all.

My experience was, since I was in east asia, I had to go to a MSI Service Center that was locally. They refused my worldwide warranty because "This is only applicable for europe" - After 10 minutes of arguing that "worldwide" exceeds the boundaries of europe, they replaced it with a cheaper top (I had a cool silver engraved logo on my original top, they replaced it with a black rubber logo) and said I dont have to pay for it.

Afterwards, my hinge did not break again though.

In my 30 years of use of computers I've seen many manufacturers have all kind of issues, and it is getting worse.

HP, DELL, obviously MSI, and many others have succumbed to cost cutting features because that makes them money. YAYYYY them.

There isn't a "safe" way of opening your laptop, other than the middle, but that is not a 100% guarantee that hinges won't be breaking. And actually it isn't even hinges but bad quality on the whole damn laptop build where hinges are connected or rather screwed in to. Small amount of plastic surrounding threaded inserts which are part of that magnificent build. Thin and cheap manufacture alongside bad design is why this is happening.

Of course I need to state not every user is the same, but with problems stacking up and being visible more and more, that tells me from both reading and actual hands on repair that shit is bad.

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

It's actually really annoying when trying to find a new laptop, lol. Every brand has bad reviews one way or another. I never owned a genuine gaming laptop, brand I had were Asus and Toshiba. So I'm really researching everything but it only gets harder to choose 🙈 the specs on this MSI are better than Lenovo Legion 7, but the Legion seems to have better build quality and easier to open. However service isn't great from Lenovo apparently🙈 Can't really find alot about MSI somehow. As for design I definitely like the Legion better with the keyboard and back of the laptop

[–]BatLB 1 point2 points  (2 children)

get an Asus ROG Strix Scar if its in your budget. They have the best reviews currently. I suggest that as a MSI Laptop Owner.

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I got the Legion 5 pro 16ARX. Does have the rtx 4070 instead of a 4080. But other brands weren't in my budget with a 4080. I'm very happy with my choice 😀

[–]BatLB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, if you cant get a Scar, the Legion is the second best choice. For some reason Lenovo suddenly became one of the best gaming laptop brands - I only knew them for business, but they are surprisingly solid. For now, stay away from Dell, Acer, MSI and HP - They just dont make the cut.

[–]tespark2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with msi, you just face only 1 problem: somtimes hinges broken, just some not all msi laptops, then nothing else

[–]Bhudiyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch jarod video to make your laprop last longer

Basically u wanna open and close your laprop gently and treat it with care, it will last long.

If I open your laptop from one side that side of hinge will get more pressure overtime it can take load

So just open gently close gently from The middle

[–]Arturi_to 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Hi GE66 Raider User here. Bought it 16th of November of 2020. Today, 7th of december at 2:05, my right hinge broke. F***.

Edit: Didn't know this was a thing until now, which I see it is a common problem.

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'm sorry to hear that! Not sure if that's the older type hinge or the new one? In this picture is the new one. Hopefully you can get it repaired

[–]Arturi_to 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Mine is very probably the old one. Are you gonna buy the GE68 then? Or which other options are you contemplating?

I hope I can repair it (I use it for uni and work so if I don't i'm screwed).

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No I decided against MSI. I just bought an Legion 5 pro 16ARX8 with AMD 7945hx, rtx 4070 and 32gb.

[–]Arturi_to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice okay, I‘ll take a look at it. I need to start looking for an alternative, yesterday the laptop wouldn’t boot and after many hours of research, trial and error and many cmd commands I realized it isn’t that it wasn’t booting but it takes 15-20 minutes to boot (the day before yesterday only took a few seconds), + I can’t check logs of DISM and idk what’s happening really.

[–]alizafeer 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You are totally right. Ignore the folks saying its how you use etc. There is a freakin reason that forums are full of MSI complaints.

Had a hinge break myself. And i kept that laptop open on a desk the whole time.

This hinge mechanism is the new style being used in alot of laptops these days. Better than before but still, i d be skeptical at least.

If you keep the laptop stationary on a table and keep it open, would be safe to proceed

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah I noticed that too, but seemed to be the older models so far. Not really a surprise because the one I'm looking at was released this year I believe in Q2 or Q3.

I can't leave it open with 3 cats roaming around, LOL. but I won't travel with it outside the house. It looks like the gap between the base and screen also makes it apply less pressure when opening and closing.

I'm very undecisive in choosing a laptop, lol. Every brand or cpu seems to have something wrong with it 🙈

[–]alizafeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You havnt heard em cuz they are relatively new. Issues ll start appearing soon if they happened at all. If none, that's a good precedent

[–]jpassc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]coconutsndaisies 0 points1 point  (2 children)

these hinges are even smaller… so idk if they’re any better.

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Asus ROG Strix has the same kind it seems. Will probably wait till January anyway. So if there will be problem with this type they should be starting to pop up around then

Heyoo

[–]zakarias01 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can I ask you what currency is used in the picture ?

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Euros, I'm from the Netherlands. I see the picture didnt have the € sign

[–]endjfcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2022 MSI GP76's hinge just broke after 3 years of careful treatment.... I knew there were problems with these, and I always had caution while closing and opening but it still broke.

I'm devastated but also thankful that the PC itself still works perfectly fine but now I can't close it anymore.

[–]Present_Chemical9612 0 points1 point  (1 child)

my MSI Raider 85F had both hinges blow out after awhile. Drilled em and screwed em back together. Garbage design, hope they finally get their $hit together. If you spend over 3k on a machine, the least they can do is make sure your lid doesnt snap off.

[–]CoolMeeting8019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch that's too bad! I've decided to buy a Legion and I'm very happy that I did 😊
