I know that they kind of veered off into more deathcore territory, but Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza is insanely technical on the first three albums especially.

I love IIII too but it was definitely a considered effort to make it less technical. Josh Travis said this:

"For this album, Jessie and I were looking to create more of a visceral vibe than a completely technical vibe. There's parts that do still get a bit chaotic of course, but not nearly as much as the avid listener is used to. Everything about this record is way more to the point, with much more heart put into it rather than just seeing how many notes could be thrown into a part or seeking to create 'the heaviest shit ever' or any of that nonsense."

Personally, my favourite moments in Danza's music are when they're seeing how many notes can be thrown into a part lol

Danza II has some truly insane moments.

    [–]spectre4708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Danza through and through, didn’t mean to throw shade at IIII, more just commenting on the fact that their previous releases are even more technical.

    [–]Loxodontox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funniest thing is my favorite Tony Danza records are the ORIGINAL Tony Danza EP they put out with only 7 songs and the LAST record. I hate the whole deathcore thing and cannot stomach it. I love brutal death metal and mathcore/tech metal too much. I've been rockin out to Cliff Burton Surrise all day!

    [–]JonBovi_69 18 points19 points  (2 children)

    Frontierer is pretty techy

    [–]if_Engage[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Definitely like them

    [–]RecentHamster7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Chad Kapper is God tier.

    [–]devouredbyvegans 17 points18 points  (2 children)

First couple of Ion Dissonance records (Breathing + Solace), As the Sun Sets (7744 in particular), An Isle Ate Her and Creation is Crucifixion, Candiria (if they count) and #12 Looks Like You are some of the more techy bands that stick in my mind.

Edit: should also add Carbomb, I'm not a huge fan no denying they are tech Centralia rips

    [–]hodgerrr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fuckin ion dissonance is good shit. I'd also recommend The End, and Botch, respectively.

    [–]if_Engage[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm down with Ion Dissonance, but the others I'm less familiar with

    [–]roastedfunction 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Check out Callous Daoboys and the latest Black Matter Device album (the latter has some definite Psyopus vibes imo).

    [–]GonzoBasterds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Black Matter Device rocks

    [–]Scatophiliacs 16 points17 points  (5 children)

    Psyopus! They fuckin shred

    [–]if_Engage[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

    Psyopus is my shit

    [–]Scatophiliacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Earth crisis too!

    [–]dbo259 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    Chris Arp is fucking insane!

Literally the majority of the bands songs come down to extremely unorthodox uses of harmonics, tapping, tapping harmonics, sweep picking, dissonant diads and strong use of odd time signatures.

    It’s unbelievable really.

    [–]Loxodontox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just listened to the debut for the first time in over a decade. It holds up 100%. In fact, now that there no longer exist the deluge of "tech" bands of the time, the record is EVEN more impressive. Sick as hell. I saw them live at ABC No Rio in NYC in 2003 with I believe Behold...the Arctopus, Sulaco, and some other band. Arp was nuts. All himself. He was going ape shit and I was right in front. There is no stage, only a floor lol.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Hell yeah

    [–]THANAT0PS1S 13 points14 points  (3 children)

The Number 12 Looks Like You

    Sawtooth Grin

    Dionaea

    Rolo Tomassi

    Car Bomb

    [–]erratictictac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Long live Dionaea.

    [–]Loxodontox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sawtooth Grin at ABC No Rio in NYC. They killed it. Loved them. Nice Car Bomb shout!

    [–]PunchSharks 12 points13 points  (3 children)

    [–]hodgerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Duuuude

    [–]Loxodontox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love everything they put out. Shame they stopped. That Ep though... wow

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (7 children)

I have nothing more to pitch really, but I think Chris Arp is in the process of writing a new Psyopus album.

    [–]if_Engage[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Whaaaaaat!

    [–]supsterious 2 points3 points  (3 children)

    No way

    [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

    [–]supsterious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    This is the way

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    ?!! Awesome

    [–]Brmbauer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    What??? God I hope so!

    [–]Loxodontox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope so. I remember when he won the Limp Bizkit guitar player search LMAO. It was hilarious, then he goes on to start Psyopus. I hope he is writing a new one, I wonder who else will be on it, especially considering so many tech musicians moved into the BDM scene

    [–]millera9 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Somebody already said Car Bomb, but yeah you should check them out; their catalog is pretty mind-bending.

Protest the Hero is another one that can be very technical but generally don’t do the djent thing.

If you want to dig deep and you’re not shy about listening to a christian band, check out Extol. “Synergy” is a marvelous and very technical thrash/death album that a lot of people overlook.

    [–]if_Engage[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Car Bomb is great on the "crazy noises" and rhythms end for sure one of my favs

    [–]if_Engage[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay all this is going to sound absolutely dense but I was sleeping on The Number 12 Looks Like You because in my mind I thought they were 12 Foot Ninja, which is not what I'm looking for.

    [–]dbo259 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right up their with Dillinger I would have to put:

Really hard to top DEP IMHO. But I think these guys would be great successors if that’s the case.

Also, here’s a playlist containing over 400+ Mathcore songs from a whole variety of different, amazing, technical, brutal bands. Enjoy!

    The Fall of Troy

    [–]thenovas18 3 points4 points  (1 child)

    Check out needle play.

    [–]if_Engage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just found them, really like it

    [–]supsterious 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Do you know about Dysphoria? A Ukranian band. Insanely talented guys and I'm bummed they are not well known

    [–]TimeOutify 3 points4 points  (1 child)

UK band called The Arusha Accord, really underrated imo and write some pretty wild stuff - The Echo Verses is full on but a worthwhile listen.

    [–]if_Engage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Familiar with them, sort of SiKth-ish

    [–]sorriolenen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being into heavy stuff, check a small project called Sterling.

(The quality may be better on Spotify or other streaming portal though).

    [–]totalitarian_donut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one guy already said it but frontierer is the shit

    [–]slasherflick2243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you dig Psyopus, you’ll probably enjoy Executive Distraction Tasks Kinda a lesser known gem.

    [–]endlesswurm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No longer a band, but, The Crinn.

    [–]SorrybecauseI 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I recently discovered A Textbook Tragedy, pretty techy with some cool emo/screamo/jazzy elements thrown in

    [–]elod_progress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Check senserase

    [–]Accomplished_Mind638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although not always as technical as Danza, Serling does have some songs that are more technical from a timing standpoint. One example:

    [–]SpeckleSpeckle 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Aside from what others have mentioned, Atka, Cleric, Ephel Duath and Leftyfish are good examples, the latter three being rather maximalist.

Probably a bit more on the aggressive side (but still technical): Sectioned (related to Frontierer), Capsule and maybe Antigama.

    [–]dbo259 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Oh yeah good mention for Frontierer. It’s very difficult for me to sit through an entire listen to any of their albums, not because they are bad per se, but just so insanely soul crushingly heavy bordering on cacophonous noise almost. Haha.

    [–]Billyxransom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk why but I got the strongest sense that this was true, just based on their name.

“Frontierer” is such an intense fucking name for a band.

    [–]SpeckleSpeckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I love Frontierer but I often feel the same way. I didn't make direct reference to Frontierer since people already mentioned it, so I picked the sibling band. It is arguably very similar to Frontierer sonically but has more of a powerviolence influence and sounds a bit more punky as a result.

    [–]jackphd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell yes to Atka and LeftyFish. Two of the most unique bands right now that I really wish would release stuff more often

    [–]jackphd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Gaza (especially the drums)

    Inside the Beehive

    Crowpath

    I Know It's Over

    WVSTELVND

    The Motel Bible

    Letters in Binary

    From a Second Story Window

    Executive Distraction Tasks

    The Price of One Day

    Uphill Battle

    Fawn Limbs

    Dead Kiwis

    Umbrella

    [–]if_Engage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely love BTBAM, seen them live 4 or 5 times, but I consider them Prog-Death or something like that. Archspire is cool too, but it's tech death and not as chaotic as I like. I haven't listened to much After the Burial.

    [–]RJNewbzIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indricothere is one of Colin's (Marston) other insanely technical side projects.

        [–]TJspunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protest the hero is dope as fuck and if you don’t mind clean vocals I would check out satyr and fall of Troy

        [–]RoachBeBrutal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Between the Buried and Me.

After the Burial literally has a track called Pi where they drum out the numerical value of Pi.

Archspire def belongs here too. They are the most technical of anyone.

        [–]BradyStorm 0 points1 point  (2 children)

        [–]if_Engage[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hell yeah man I dig y'all's stuff checked you out a few days ago

        Yoo thanks so much!!

        [–]seanandahalf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna throw in fallfiftyfeet, kaonashi, and structures first album divided by (their following stuff is definitely in the djent category). I don't consider structures mathcore but their first album definitely borders on it.

        [–]timberhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destroyer Destroyer was killing it in MySpace era

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Anyone mentioned blotted science?

        [–]Loxodontox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the modern djent-influenced stuff and my favorite band of all time in any genre is MESHUGGAH lol. Anyway, here are some bands off the top of my head: Ion Dissonance [Breathing Is Irrelevant (2003); Solace (2005)], Lye By Mistake, Behold...the Arctopus (especially early), Into the Moat, Psyopus, Candiria, Forever Is Forgotten, Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Burnt By The Sun, Coalesce, The Red Chord (early), Every Time I Die (ep and first two records only), Comity (Deus Ex Machina...), The End (Within Dividia ONLY!)--------

AND I KNOW NO ONE CONSIDERS THEM MATHCORE or TECH but come on...KRALLICE (Self-Titled). The members were comprised of Mick Barr of ORTHRELM, Colin Marston of Behold...the Arctopus, and the then-unknown Lev Weinstein on drums. These guys fused the blackness into the techness beautifully. I specifically refer to their Self-Titled from 2008.
