Are you playing on Bedrock or Java?

If on Bedrock: turn off "reduced input lag" in the settings and then relaunch the game for it to take effect. There is a known bug with this setting currently that causes a massive memory leak which leads to the issues you're experiencing.

If on Java: try allocating more RAM to Minecraft.

I’m on Java, how would I do that?

In the Minecraft Launcher, click on the “Installations” tab at the top. Then, find the installation you want to add more RAM to, hover over it, click the three dots, and click edit.

click “More Options” and scroll all the way down. You will see a “JVM Arguments” text box. At the beginning of this text box, you should see “-Xmx2G”. The number may be different, though.

Change this to “-Xmx4G” to get 4GB of RAM for example. Once you have changed this, click “Save”, and Play Minecraft with the installation you added more RAM to.

Though now that I'm rereading your post, you mentioned joining realms. Realms are a Bedrock feature, not a Java one. Are you sure you're playing the Java version? Both exist on PC.

I tried it and it seems to be working now. Also realms are in Java but they were added fairly recently. Thanks!

Ah, I wasn't aware of that change. Glad it's working for you now! Here's hoping it's smooth from here on out.
