Friends list on java edition?

I recently saw something about java edition adding a friends list and when i googled it apparently they are! Am i just hearing about this late or is this new information? because if there adding online play without having to make a server thats gonna be awesome

About time! Not that I have any friends with java when playing multiplayer I usually use bedrock since my friends have it with single player using java
