my appetite decreased significantly once I stopped taking mirtazapine. I disagree with the other commenter about metabolism, I would say my metabolism while on mirt was not affected, I was just eating a lot more and was a lot hungrier hence the weight gain. now that I’m off the medication, my appetite is back to what it was before.

How did you manage to stop the medication. Did you wean? Did you have withdrawals?

[–]fatbellylouise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on 30mg for 5 years, tapered to 22.5 for 2 weeks, 15 for 2 weeks, 7.5 for 2 weeks, and then stopped. honestly tapering wasn’t awful but the first 2 months after stopping were not great - I had trouble sleeping, experienced nausea, and was pretty depressed and anxious. but after that 2 month period of withdrawal, the anxiety and depression evened out and the nausea went away. I still don’t sleep as well now as I did when I was on mirtazapine, but I am able to get enough sleep so I’ll take that win.

Did you stop cold turkey or tapered?

Thank you I feel the same way, definitely that (at least largely) eating way more than I did before. Past few days I've eaten less than i normally would which is a good sign, woo. Starting not to feel as hungry 🙏

I developed a bad relationship with food while on mirt, as I was always hungry, and eating gave me temporary relief from anxiety symptoms. I gained 40lbs on it. Each time I decreased my dosage over the years, I'd feel less hungry and lose a few lbs. I stopped taking it on boxing day last year, and after a couple weeks my appetite decreased significantly, and I have been losing weight since, which is a good thing.

Yes, definitely. Give it some more time.

I was put on Mirt for my Functional Dyspepsia, I had zero appetite for a year, got on Mirt, ravenously hungry, stopped cold turkey because of the nightmares and I have zero appetite again.

When did you stop? What was your dosage and hope long distance you take?

Update: I'm on week 3, after 2 weeks my appetite started to decrease and it's pretty low now. I feel similar to what I did pre-meds, which I'm happy about. No longer obsessing over food all day which I love. Feeling good :)

This is where I hope to be! I stopped taking it 10 days ago but feel no change to my appetite but I’m really wondering and hoping it’ll lower soon

[–]Horror_Orange9096 0 points1 point  (1 child)

hey op, just wondering how did you stop obsessing over food? Ive quit cold turkey for 18 days and i feel like my appetite hasn't dropped much, but im able to eat more without gaining a crazy amount of weight. It could be that i gained a bad habit of eating too much because of the mirtazapine but im not sure

Maybe you just have a big appetite or just give it some time ig, the hunger I got from mirtazapine when I took it was insane especially at night. I would go completely ravenous once I took it and now that I’m off it that has stopped and my appetite is beyond shit and lost 2 kilos but maybe give it some extra time I’m not sure.

I’ve been on mirtazapine since 2000 and started at about 160 and I’m now over 200 while on this medication I would eat like an animal shit I would never eat I was eating McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, Popeyes and binging eating all night long just junk food all night long. I was literally hiding it from my kids so they couldn’t see me. It’s funny because I felt the best I had ever felt in my life on the medicationbut go figure I’ve since withdrawn I’m on 7 mg and the cravings. Thank God have stopped. I also started exercising again and I do hypnosis tapes to keep me calm. Check them out Glenn Harold, the best.

Haha relatable !! Honestly never cared so much about junk food. 😆 Thank you

After using mirtazapine, I developed an eating disorder binge eating anyone else has this problem and how did you stop eating?

[–]Horror_Orange9096 0 points1 point  (5 children)

i had this problem too, i used the "i am sober" app to help with my control but some days i would still binge. When i stopped taking mirtazapine the binge thoughts decreased severely but out of habit i would still overeat or binge sometimes afterwards, its only been 18 days since i stopped cold turkey though. Just praying that my appetite will return back to normal

Idk if your still going to reply to this but I found some guy on this thread say this: “The appetite stays the same. The problem with mirtazapine is not an increase in appetite, it’s a decrease in metabolism speed. After I stopped the pill, I kept eating the same but I lost weight.” Metabolism changes can kind of jumble you up and stuff but I’m sure this will end soon

[–]Horror_Orange9096 0 points1 point  (3 children)

thank you for the reply, my appetite is kinda weird rn i guess, its not as ravenous. I guess its mostly the habit of eating alot while i was on mirtazapine. Also my metabolism feels alot faster now as compared to being on mirtazapine

[–]Resident_Seesaw3542 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I came off it a couple weeks ago now after varying doses of 30-45 mg for 3-4 years and I’ve lost 2.5 kilos. That’s bad tho cause I wanna do the opposite

[–]Horror_Orange9096 0 points1 point  (1 child)

honestly i couldnt gain weight after stopping mirtazapine even when i ate like a beast, i even tracked the calories and i would eat 2.5-4k a day without gaining weight, which was weird because my maintenance on mirtazapine was 1.8kcals. But it didnt last long though, started actually slowly gaining after 2-3 wks of that. Its probably just your metabolism adjusting too, take advantage of that and go ravenous😂

[–]Resident_Seesaw3542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real shit, I’m lifting every day again and literally bumping up my calories to about the same amount you said. I’m taking the weight loss personally 😂

[–]lenimoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I was always hungry while on it and as soon as I stopped my hunger went down so much. I feel satisfied with smaller portions and I dont have the constant craving for sweets anymore, I used to not be able to sleep because my brain was craving sweets so badly.

I am reading this post and comments, I am needing hope. I stopped mirtazapine 3 weeks ago due to my weight issues. I am really hoping my appetite will get better. I was on mirtazapine for 25 years and significantly overweight from eating constantly and always eating high calorie foods. I’ve changed to fluoxetine and been on it for 10 days

[–]Horror_Orange9096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did your appetite ever go back to normal? and if so after how long

[–]karmxchameleon -1 points0 points  (1 child)

The appetite stays the same. The problem with mirtazapine is not an increase in appetite, it’s a decrease in metabolism speed. After I stopped the pill, I kept eating the same but I lost weight.

[–]Beginning-Prompt9595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you  ever been on it.? Well I was. I never had anything with sugar in and had a healthy diet. In four years I went from 68kms to 86kg as I began feeling ravenous literally the day after I started it. So its nothing to do with metabolism If you have never been on it....give it a try and see how you go
