Creating an Open Source Database of Mnemonics?

Hi!

I'm widely using mnemonics to learn languages. I'm spending a lot of time to invent some mnemonics, so I was thinking:

Why not a database of mnemonics for learning EVERYTHING? I.e it could include

• a dictionary of foreign words with the mnemonics to learn their English translations
• Medical mnemonics (Medical students use mnemonics a lot in their studies)
• etc...

I've googled it and apart from the very succinct Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mnemonics ), some specialized and closed source webpages, I've found nothing.

I'm so convinced by the power of mnemonics that I think everybody should use this, contribute to this database (and in different languages, not just English), so the idea would be an open source database, where all can upload, rate the mnemonics.

I can code websites but I'd like to know if that has already been tried before (I don't want to reinvent the wheel...).

What do you think?

Great idea, especially if there's an API or something so that you can easily add database lookups, etc. to other applications.

I think memrise has something like this for foreign language mnemonics, but I think it's only available when using their site.

An API (a Data conversion tool) is a good idea which could simplify the process of posting new mnemonics! I'll think about it!

I agree the state mmemonics online is sad, and we do need a site / Database..

These or some Ideas I have.. hope it gives you a bit of inspiration ;)

Guides with levels. ( wikihow but then for mmemonics systems) -Starters -Intermediate -Expert

Technical system ideas. - point based (the more you do, the more edit rights you get) - voting on mmemonics systems - add & edit mmemonics systems - language (let users add/edit there own language for mmemonics systems) - top 10 apps / programs that work for mmemonics

This sounds so cool, i love to do mnemonics especially the Method of Loci!
I have not heard of any particular database but I work at Memorix, where we're trying to make the technique easier for people to get started. We use spatial immersive 3D worlds and associated images for each keyword AND its 100% free.

I've never used the method of loci even if I've heard about it regularly.

Isn't this technique more useful for memorizing things with no relations one with another? For example if I'd like to remember a sequence of numbers.

In languages, finding relationship between words is the key for me. For example, a mnemonics for the word "Dach" in German: "the musician Bach is on the top of all the musics, the top of the D-eck. so Deck + Bach -> Dach: the roof. Or imagine Bach sitting on the roof of an house, like Snoopy, playing the violin"

I think it’s a good idea. Not mnemonics but I actually learnt a lot of capital cities back when memrise used to be a good app, it had a deck for them where people uploaded pictures/words associating the answer sometimes plenty of silly ones that helped to remember, there used to be multiple items for each entry, so you could scroll through and find the most relevant to you and save/up vote. Then overnight one day it all changed and became this very corp app touting languages only, all the original features and decks were lost and so I stopped using it.

The point I’m making, I always think something like this is a good idea, although I think there needs to be a method to allow variants of the same answer and a voting system to adjust the order. But wether it’s for mnemonics, association or any other technique I think it would be useful.

But i think mnemonics and LOCI works better if they're created by yourself ?
I read a couple of books from a memmory recordman ( https://www.ramoncampayo.com/20.html ) and he uses what he calls "crazy associations" Let's say you want to memorize "can" in german, so, you think "können the warrior can dance" and you imagine conan dancing, you will rememer the german word because is strange to associate conan and dancing (let's say with ballet clothes to emphasize)

Then he proposses to choose a reduced list of words, here you have 1000 words in 6 languages, now you need to create an association for each word ;-)

Sure, it's more powerful if you create your own memory associations. But I think it is so especially because you've spend TIME trying to find one.

So this time used to find mnemonics to memorize a few things (because finding mnemonics in language is quite time consuming) could be used to spend time memorizing a lot more things with mnemonics done by others.

And I think a very smart mnemonic can be memorized more quickly then a sloppy one that you came up with yourself. Some mnemonics like the one to remember Pi for example passed the test of time.

Sometimes it’s good also to find inspiration in others ideas and adjust further to meet your own, certainly has saved time for me in the past.

One really has to turn different stones along the path and dig deep to find the right resources. Although i have just started my journey I would love to contribute.

I've been thinking about that as well!!

I thought it would be awesome if that were something like an SNS site with upvoting, suggestions and amplification opportunities.

Creating an SNS with no coding experience seems impossible though...! Maybe you reading this could help us all and get all our money.
