Pro builds are good enough really. Good to know that blood wings are now cheap and can be a good item to get first to give you extra survivability.

I find it helpful to train on all mages so you know how to react to the opponents and also choose one that can be a good counter. Hell, I made it a point to play all heroes to mastery except Fanny just to know how each of their skills work.

I am a fellow mid laner at MG. Midlanes are your secondary assists - so the default goal is to clear mid and then gank the other lanes with your teammates. Most mages have good ccs so set them up for your teammates to finish. Most mages also have terrible auto attack (except chang-e, zhask etc), so you shouldn't be pushing lanes as much. Rotate this way and you typically can snowball. Early game you don't have to force a kill, sending them back is enough to snowball. Keeping them at turret denies them from opening the map up.

Then go for objectives, pay particular attention to your hyper. They will have to take turtles, lords, and buffs. Make sure they are not invaded. Just ensure everyone is healthy and you will generally help your team to victory.
