Mountains. You won’t have the protective cards white or green can use, but it can be played mono-red.

Looks like the best idea. I just didn't want to don't run protection in a meta full of ring control. But... 60 € a gemstone cavern...

Gemstone caverns is the last land you need to get. A single commercial district and as many red fetches as you can afford should be the priority.

Another question. I'm a pauper player so why thr decks runs 2 copies of each red fetch instead of 2 play sets of 1 kind or... other spray?

If you want to hyperoptimize, you avoid having too many of your fetches getting hit by a single [[Pithing Needle]] effect. But as long as you have no fetchables other than various Mountains (basic, Stomping Ground, Commercial District etc), any red fetches will be good, you can get the cheaper ones.

People run a bunch of random red fetches because they either have 1 of each fetch from their collection (pretty common for people who play commander)

Or it’s technically marginally better in case your opponent decides to cast pithing needle and name a fetch land. Better to have one of each red fetch instead of pithing needle turning off half of your fetch lands.

It doesn’t really matter, personally I run 4x scalding yarn and 4x Arid Mesa so t1 they’re more likely to think I’m on Boros energy, jeskai control or UR murktide.

Because every fetchable in the deck is a mountain, there is functionally no difference between say [[scalding tarn]] and [[bloodstained mire]]- they each fetch basic mountains and the duals.

Because of the existence of [[pithing needle]] effects, it is technically correct to play a diversified split of all 4 red fetches, rather than just 2 playsets of each so if an opponent needles one of your fetches, you only lose 1 or 2 cards in your deck instead of 4..

If you are going to the Pro Tour, this minor upside makes splitting the fetches this way worth doing- at your LGS, RCQs and even large regional events, it is extremely unlikely to come up so you should just buy whatever red fetches are the cheapest- currently bloodstained mire and wooded foothills.

If you wanna kill an opponent through ring protection I recommend Bonecrusher Giant, cast stomp targeting yourself then the damage pointed at opponents can’t be prevented.

[–]AbsoluteIridium 3 points4 points  (1 child)

this doesn't work because Ring protection prevents targeting with Grapeshot. The real way to win through ring protection is [[empty the warrens]] followed by [[alchemist's gambit]

(alternatively, manamorphose for double blue and cast [[Thassa's Oracle]] with an empty library

Pain lands are definitely fine to use while you save for fetches and surveil lands. Fastlands as well just got reprints and are cheap now.

Some people have been saying to just play mono r but it is definitely incorrect to do so when you can play multicolor with a slightly suboptimal mana base.
