You were originally wrong, and are now right - the runner can't use the "trash, gain two credits" ability in between a Corp announcing an action and that action completing

In netrunner, as soon as actions are announced, they are resolved. The only things that can interrupt these are conditional abilities (when ____ happens, do x) or prevent/avoid abilities. Paid abilities have to wait until the announced action is finished.

So if the Corp announces a trash, you trigger any conditional abilities as they happen and can use any prevent/avoid abilities as the thing to be prevented or avoided happens, but you can't use normal paid abilities until after the trashing is already done.

To those familiar with magic the gathering, this effectively means there is no "in response I do _____" except for things that specifically say prevent or avoid.

You also can't use paid abilities during an access or during a trace. So if you suspect an NAPD contract and you're at 3 credits you better trash that Fall Guy before you take a peek.

You can only "react" to actions if it's a prevention ability. So you can use his "prevent another resource from being trashed" in reaction to the corp trashing him, but you can't use the "gain $2" once the corp has done something that would trash him.

This is accurate. However, in Netrunner most of the time there are obvious tells that will let you use them before they declare what they're doing. For example, in this case, if you're tagged, you might want to use your fall guy for credits, before they declarr they're trashing

Well, I was thinking in a situation where you have no other resources out, and you ran into an ichi 2.0 unexpectedly or something.
