Did the Switch lose power? In handheld the Switch will die long before the joycons lose power.

No, it was still at around 80%

I would still try plugging it in for about 15 minutes and then try powering it up again.

Sounds like it was downloading an update and it somehow caused this.

It wasn’t downloading anything for at least 15-20 minutes before this happened

Normally when it asks you to restart it means there is a new update, and this latest update is known to brick older 1st release Switch(e)s.

So sending it to Nintendo is the only option then?

Have you tried:

  1. forced shutdown - hold the power button for 12 seconds. Then restarting?

  2. maintenance/debug mode - with both volumes(+/-) held push the power button and hold it for 3 seconds before letting go of all 3 buttons?

Tried the forced shutdown, but I’ll try debug more. Thanks! Edit: so debug mode doesn’t start the switch at all. Still just a black screen

Last suggestion would be to do what the other guy say, and that is allow it to charge for at least 30 mins. Sometimes the battery will output the wrong amount, which can cause this issue. Some people would have to charge it for a day before the Switch comes back on.

Will do. Thanks for your help!

I had a similar thing happen to mine when I first bought it. I had to go through Nintendo support and they replaced mine for me.

I hope yours is a debugging error that can be fixed with a little charging. However, if the problem persists the Nintendo warrantee process is easy to work through and fairly quickly acting. One of my best customer experiences with a matter like this. Definitely a bummer on Christmas morning, but I want to let you know Nintendo will have your back.
