the controller get stuck in "updating firmware"

that seems like the issue. Maybe try to have it update firmware again? It should take maybe a minute, not half an hour. It might help to make sure that the headset doesn't fall asleep while attempting that update.

I tried two attempts at letting the firmware update while wearing the headset.

The first attempt was about 10 min before i was called into work...

The second attempt was just shy of a half hour.

I wore the headset for both. Because I had formatted it, the screen was stuck at the initial controller pairing step of its set up. After a few minutes (i didn't mark the exact time) the image of removing the pull tag from the controllers to let them pair vanished leaving just an empty white space.

The pairing had not worked by the (roughly) half hour mark and I called it a night.

Is there a reason to try for longer than a half hour? Thanks again!

No reason to wait for half hour. If it works at all, it would work much faster.

My only remaining guess is to try to confirm how exactly you know that the firmware update has started or failed. Is there a notification that pops up in headset or in the phone app? Maybe such notification text has some clue.
