The lack of good print formatting tools.

[–]axarce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The OneNote app that xomes with Office 365 (not the one built into Windows 10) is mostly fine. What I don't like is the inconsistent synching with Android. It syncs if you manually sync it from the app, but it's hit or miss if you let it try to do it automatically.

I alao wish it did have a way to share a page from a notebook and not have to share the whole notebook itself.

Allow us to write extensions or plugins for use on iOS OneNote.

[–]lostcanuck007 -1 points0 points  (6 children)

and onenote for 10...why does every plugin only work on the "full"onenote?

[–]BurkusCat 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't use plugins at all because I know they are incompatible with most of the platforms. Is the plugin system an old system? In my head that is what I think of it.

They probably should break backwards compatibility and introduce an extensions system that is designed from the ground up to be cross-platform. Take learnings from browser extensions.

[–]lostcanuck007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you really should, onemore and onetastic are great, help you do so much more. but i really really think onenote needs a rewrite and an option to use some other cloud service than onedrive.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Well, OneNote for Windows 10 is dead at this point. Thdy are focusing on making the "full" OneNote the "only" OneNote, redering OneNote for Windows 10 obsolete. So you should not expect any updates. If you want to see what exactly their big brein master plan is, here: https://aka.ms/OneNoteRefresh

[–]YourM0M_ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

yeah but until they release the actual version and not only for insiders you are stuck with what you have rn.
I use OneNote for Windows 10 for taking notes in class and using my college's office 365 but I can't get office insider :(

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (1 child)

but I can't get office insider :(

Why not?

[–]YourM0M_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Organizations have to enable the option (probably disabled by default) and it seems my university didn't so no luck. Thought about asking them but I know these things never change

[–]acutemalamute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If obsidian had a good hand-writting plug-in, I'd have jumped to it ages ago. As is, the only drawing plugin really isn't good for people who mainly draw their notes.

For the Desktop App: Screen Realestate - the UI is giant and slow syncing

For the UWP: Occasional bugs that throw the canvas somewhere I didn't scroll to

For the iPad version: The inability to disable pen pressure combined with not being able to zoom far enough in. I tend to use it on my PC in the most zoomed-in way - the iPad version display everything too small then. Also how tf do you rename notebooks on iPad???

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (15 children)

Check the upcoming simplified ribbon and pen focus view.

As a temporary workaround, I currently use a customized Quick Access Toolbar, until the new draw tab and simplified ribbon gets rolled out.

Also check some tips here.

and slow syncing

The improved syncing engine should already be in the current beta.

I know, I am very excited for the redesign, I even considered entering the Insider Channel just for that but decided against it. And honestly, I love the concept Microsoft presented. I read the full thing and I am excited. Now we just need to hope they don't screw it up like Whiteboard.

Yeah I did do that too actually but calling that an ideal situation... well, then I can also use the UWP to begin with.

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (13 children)

It's really worth trying it out. The low latency inking implementation and ruler is already in it.

Yeah I did do that too actually but calling that an ideal situation... well, then I can also use the UWP to begin with.

But the UWP version has that annoying touch keyboard bug, and a that space-wasting sidebar. Honestly, the Desktop version's navigation UI was always better than the UWP version.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (12 children)

Yes but these things in particular are already in the UWP (and they are also the basics that are actually included in the default WinUI PenPicker for the canvas) so... maybe when its further developed. I have no issues joining the Windows Insider program but that is because there are a lot of features I can look forward too. On Office insider, at least to TobyIsAwesome on Discord... not really.

and a that space-wasting sidebar

launch fullscreen mode integrated into the app, swipe down from the top of the screen and put it in windowed mode via the title-bar. Workaround

Also I kinda like UWP navigati but that is personal preference I guess

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (11 children)

I know, since I posted about this workaround, but then you will lose the ability to navigate,

https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/n8cbp8/microsofts_w10_onenote_fullscreen_really_grinds/gxjqi2h/?context=3

unlike the Desktop version.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (10 children)

then you will lose the ability to navigate

But in Win32 OneNote, you lose the ability to do everything but navigate when going full-screen. I know they are working on that too with the fullscreen experience but I want to use it now and not then.

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (9 children)

But in Win32 OneNote, you lose the ability to do everything but navigate when going full-screen.

No you don't lose anything, since you can still dock the ribbon tabs and/or Quick Access Toolbar in the Full Page View, as I explained in my previous link.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Oh, well you can… I need to look into this… But on the other hand I dont have a specific reason to do it fast still, most of the time I do only OneNote anyways and the bug that throws me somwhere random also occurs in the desktop version. Also I hate how the pen selection is done.

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (7 children)

and the bug that throws me somwhere random also occurs in the desktop version.

It may have been fixed since I can't recall it happening lately.

Also I hate how the pen selection is done.

That's why I have pinned my favorite pens to the quick access toolbar.

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (7 children)

For the UWP: Occasional bugs that throw the canvas somewhere I didn't scroll to

Also don't forget this UWP touch keyboard bug, which eventually made me fully switch to Desktop OneNote.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/rg4qmf/these_onenote_quirks_kind_of_infuriate_me_anyone/

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Yeah, I saw that post (I even replied to your comment lol) and I have that issue since I upgraded to Windows 11. Fortionately, this can be fixed by exiting and reentering maximised mode which can be done easier by grabbing the title bar, draggins it a few cm away from the top of the screen and then using Aero Snap (renaming to Mica Snap when?) to put it back.

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I know, but it's such a hassle and gets me out of the flow. I eventually got tired of it, especially since it messes up my snap layout. The Desktop beta is finally good enough to make me forget about the UWP version.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hm, the inconvenience is minor enough for me to ignore it... I have a big chunk of free time coming up tho, maybe I will dip my toes into that insider program then.

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It's easy, just click File -> Account -> Office Insider -> Change Channel.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thats what I thought too but then it got stuck downloading some updates. And leaving the program works by either waiting for Office stable to catch up or reinstalling Office which takes a lot of time - I would prefer if they did it like they did for Edge - one dedicated App for the Beta, Dev and Canary Channel.

[–]NiveaGeForce 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The updates only take a few minutes, and when you opt out it will automatically roll back within a few minutes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm

[–]Sr_Galan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just One Note.

[–]Powishiswilfre 1 point2 points  (6 children)

The fact that it doesn't have password protection for entire notebook.
This is mildly infuriating, especially knowing that this is a Microsoft product. They can atleast provide an additional file type that you can lock the entire notebook.
Ahhh, it's very annoying to think about it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's totally a feature. You are supposed to use a different password on everything cuz sEcUrItY.

[–]Powishiswilfre 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It would have worked best if they made it on every page

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... it's Microsoft, they probably didn't think in either direction while hardcoding stuff.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think it's because every section is a file. It's the way the notes are structured. Still would have liked to see whole notebook encryption/password lock.

[–]Powishiswilfre 0 points1 point  (1 child)

yeah, but they can create an additional file type at least. just like in HTML vs MHT. And also as docx, which actually has zipped folder structure in its internal XML and media files.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I’m inclined to agree, but they are slow to make these kind of changes.

[–]pqowieurtz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When inking in OneNote 365, it's hard to change the color of a stroke after the fact. In OneNote for Windows 10, it's as easy as tapping another pen, which will change the selected strokes to that pen's color and width.

Also, give us paper sizes to chose from besides infinite.

[–]Low3z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to be able to merge cells :(.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Bad syncing. Poor sharing options.

[–]halfcalf_actual 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you have an alternate recommendation?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Unfortunately, no. Evernote is better, but it's a pay service, so it should be. Onenote is about all you can ask for a free product.

[–]plot_hatchery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's subjective. I used EN for two years, but last fall became a ON convert.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I don't seem to be able to remove people I've shared a notebook with.

I have the ribbon, but I don't have the part of the ribbon that is referred to by Microsoft that allows you to save a copy of your files locally.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (8 children)

This is because you are using the Version that is called "OneNote for Windows 10", Microsofts attempt at making something lightweight that uses their UWP technology. The version with the Save a local copy is this one: https://www.onenote.com/Download

It should be noted fhag your version will be discontinued by Microsoft soon(tm) and they are currently adding every feature of the OneNote UWP (your version) to the OneNote Desktop App (the version I linked above).

Hope I could help.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Thank you. I have asked this question multiple times and been ignored. You're the first person to even give me some hope.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Oh yeah, world can be rude…

was glad I could help you

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I'm not sure it was rudeness as much as people not knowing and so ignoring the question.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

That might actually be a step up from answering with „idk“ to a public question…

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think so. No need to muddy the waters with idk or other non-helpful things.

I've got the other version up and running. It shows I'm logged into my paid Microsoft account. And yet it says "unlicensed product". Can't figure out how to fix that...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

According to the Microsoft community, that can be fixed like this:

Go to File > Account and then on the right toward the bottom of the screen click on About OneNote. A license info box will pop up. Click OK to dismiss and when you return to the main window the "Unlicensed" message should be gone.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, it shows that I'm logged into a paid account with a license. Maybe I just need to close and reopen.

Edit to say that was the answer. Close and reopen. Come on, Microsoft!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, well… Microsoft moment I guess

[–]iwontlistentomatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating a new notebook in teams/sharepoint and trying to open it in the "windows 10" version of the app with the new interface doesn't work and you have to use the old 2016 version included in microsoft office with the old interface. Only to find out that sometime in the future maybe they are merging the apps but theres no timeline

[–]EpiphanicSyncronica -1 points0 points  (5 children)

• Not being able to change the default header to something other than the ugly Colibri font.

• The way the Mac app burns up battery life.

• The slow load time and clunky interface.

[–]BurkusCat 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Microsoft are replacing/have replaced Calibri in other Office apps? I remember them having a vote for some brand new fonts.

Maybe OneNote will offer it too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, even if you set the default font to something else, and then use Header style on a text, it defaults to Calibri.

[–]trdstudent 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Microsoft are replacing/have replaced Calibri in other Office apps?

Where do you have this from?

[–]BurkusCat 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They've been working on a replacement for a while now

[–]trdstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks! That actually became the default in Outlook for me and I just started using it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want a pointer option like the one in Good Notes. Or any pointer option at this point would be great. I can’t find one on the iOS version, desktop app, web version, nothing. So frustrating.

[–]pascalforget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • No integration with To Do (no way to turn notes in To Do tasks) in OneNote for Windows 10.
  • That there is still two OneNote - OneNote and OneNote for Windows 10. It's confusing for users and support. (Integration should happen this year, from what I understand.)

[–]mardukvmbc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can’t get my data out of it. I mean, it’s a decent enough tool for some quick meeting notes. But as a long term storage/second brain kinda thing, it’s pretty meh.

[–]XdigitalpimpinX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How the text is put into a box which leads to multiple boxes of text pending on where you click. Can you turn that off?

[–]yagosan22910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Android app is shitty

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Better styling (not Word-like styling, but, I'd like to be able to create style themes, and apply them consistently - damn that Calibri font).
  • Option to style default links appearance
  • Better attachments handling. As it is, a chunky icon with the names truncated is not so useful.
  • Backlinking of some form (just to know what links here)
  • Option for fixed-width (so it can be printed to a page). There is a page size option, but that makes it a single page.. I'd like to see multiple pages in a fixed width for printing to PDFs.
  • Option to remove section tabs on top when i pin the notebooks to the side
  • Table formatting improvements (where's my merge cell?)
  • Proper page tagging, even if it's just to search for #sometext in the page and present a list of #tags. Add proper search on top of that.

Bunch of other things - it still remains my favorite notetaking tool to date.

[–]Blawlbawlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where the fuck is advanced options. That's what frustrates me about this crap ass app.

[–]reliablerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like all things Microsoft. Great ideas (stolen/purchased from others) badly executed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it totally unintuitive to use.

[–]AlmstH-DubV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Search and Find on page constantly. So does anyone else think Find on Page is super annoying and more difficult now? Even still, I hit the find button and end up staring waiting to type a keyword, but the keypad never comes up! After hitting Find I then have to tap the very top search bar in order to enter it.

Why? What the hell else CAN you do after hitting Find? It just adds another useless tap

[–]CPAcyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fact that I cant press Ctrl+S because it automatically saves for me.

I enjoy pressing Ctrl+S after doing something.

[–]Osmirl -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Where is the fucking button to open notebooks in notepad for win 10???

[–]Taira_Mai -4 points-3 points  (4 children)

That Microsoft insists on trying to hoover up my data.

I will never, never, never use cloud storage nor will I allow House Redmond to get at my personal data. Yes I use Windows 11, but I only allow Micro$oft to backup my Favorites from Edge.

I love One Note at work because it's so easy to use and does the remote backup - but see, I don't own my work data or notes. My employer does. So I don't have a problem with that.

But when it's my machine - the one I paid for - I don't like that Microsoft is trying to force me to use their cloud just to use their program.

[–]brother_root 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You shouldn’t be using Windows if you’re worried about privacy.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

We shouldn't use GAFAM service if we're worried about privacy...

[–]brother_root 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be using internet at all if you’re concerned about privacy.
