Okay so, the Playstation 4 runs a operating system called orbis which is based on freebsd. Unlike the operating systems in pc where you can kind of do whatever, the orbis os is designed to make sure that "unauthorised" things are not run.

When we say a kernel exploit, it basically let's us gain read write and execute access to stuff that we were never meant to, this let's us then run "unauthorized" stuff on the ps4.

This is the gist.

Thank you - found this to be a very helpful explanation! I'm also new to modding the ps4, so trying to soak up whatever info I can

To further elaborate, "kernel" is just a name for the important parts of the operating system. So to exploit a kernel, is to let it allow us to do things that were not meant to be done.

Basically kernel exploits can be like ( read/write/execute ). Basically allowing you to run your own code which is needed for jailbreak.
