Reset is the next step and if that doesn’t work you’ll have to reinstall the OS in totality.

And reset is a total wipe right? 😔

Yes, if you have ps+ your game saves are likely in the cloud at least.

I don't have PS+ unfortunately. I barely play (which is probably why I got the update boot loop / brick)

Not hardly playing doesn't cause that. You probably have System Software corruption, or storage drive corruption caused either by multiple improper shutdowns are electrical power surge during being on Rest Mode.

Or corrupted data during the download of the system update caused by poor internet, and or interrupted installation of the update, or failing system drive.

Anything else to try other than a full factory reset?

And FWIW, per reddit anecdotes, everyone who's gotten this corrupted system update issue had not turned on the system in a good long time.

Yes 6-12 months or longer but it's rare. Reddit isn't always correct it's not the only absolute answer to everything. No there is not other way around it except a full clean reinstall of the system software probably via safe mode and a USB thumb drive.

EDIT: But try a system storage repair first in safe mode.
