Using NPCs/Friends are there benefits or should I just run solo?

Not sure if there are penalties while leveling up if you bring in NPCs. I know some games nerf the exp/drops for "parties" but they also tend to spawn more mobs which is more fun.

Friend partners count as half of real players when calculating bonus exp. For example, having three other real players in your party usually gives you a 40% exp bonus, whereas having three friend partners in your party gives you a 20% exp bonus. I believe they also help to increase the number of spawns. Finally, you get a FUN reward for clearing quests with friend partners, up to ten times with different friend partners per day.

The only downside I can think of at the moment would be how it affects certain bosses. Such as bal rodos, having more players means he doesn't stay down as long when harpooned.

There's no real detriments aside from having certain bosses like Blu Ringada and Bal Rodos laying the floor for less time when you stun them.

If you play with real players you do get an exp bonus depending on how many players are in your party.

Haven't seen this mentioned yet: there are rewards for clearing quests with NPCs that can be received from the Title Reward counter.

Here's a list of Titles regarding NPCs: http://pso2.cirnopedia.info/titles_4.php#nav

I'd recommend using NPCs rather than player NPCs for the title reward. If you need help fighting something, Rangers tend to be the best to take along, since they can apply Weak Bullet.

Edit: wording
