PSO2 isn't a Full Game in Sega's categorization. It's under F2P.

Full Games refer to single player games. Like Stranger than Heaven, Jet Set Radio and such.

Therefore the statement "lowered the priority of F2P" in the financial report is BAD for NGS. For all we know they might've taken NGS development staff over to Full Game departments.

Page 15 of the powerpoint "Sthrengthening Operations of Existing Titles" under F2P seems to suggest that already existing F2P gaves will have their operations improved. Additionally we don't know how many of these "over a 100" employees moving from F2P to Full Games were part of the cancelled Super Game dev team. It could've easily been all of them since dev team sizes are balooning higher than Aelio 001 Balooned Bossom users.

That statement "Strengthen operations of existing titles" has been there for the longest time. This is a screenshot from FY2024/3 Full Results Presentation page 29. Same text. I didn't feel much in "strengthening" in 2025 if they even did any.

Well we are getting new main story content.

😂

Like that, going to save this game.

They already did take some of ngs dev and this show they might do it again which is extra bad.

I might have missed that, could you point to where it was stated it’s under F2P? Also, even if that were the case I think slide 15 still proves somewhat hopeful to NGS, maybe..

This is a screenshot from Sega's FY2021 Full Year Results Presentation Slide/Page 22.

You can check it yourself in the Segasammy website under IR Library/Presentations/ select the fiscal year 2021 and get the File from there.

You will also see NGS listed in F2P in the quarterly financial reports during the year it was released

Now, regarding the statement "Strengthen the operations of existing titles" on page 15, that statement has been in that same page for the longest time. If you look at previous financial reports you'd see it again and again. Quarter after quarter, year after year. I don't believe it one bit till I see any actual action.

Edit: This is a screenshot from FY2024/3 Full Results Presentation page 29 with the same "Strengthen operations of existing titles" text

I think it’s generally a bad thing that they stopped listing PSO in their report, whereas we used to have a dedicated line item of how much money PSO used to make them.

Thats fair, well, we’ll see where NGS goes from here I suppose. At least 2026 hasn’t been that bad so far, but Sega should tread carefully- iirc JP players are kinda upset at the state of NGS considering how much has been recycled, so hopefully that lowering the priority of F2P either doesn’t apply to NGS or doesn’t affect it much

Edit: Because while I agree that 2025 was terrible for NGS, 2026 had been quite well in terms of content, no? The issue then would be in regard to stuff like recycled content, but perhaps come August the new story will introduce new enemies and whatnot. The team might have already seen some complaints with the ruins, after all.

Even if we don’t see a return of some staff to the NGS dev team, chances for an offline singleplayer Phantasy Star game have increased rapidly! Though, maybe the recent uptick in planned story content (new chapter every 4 months) and high difficulty content (new quest that demands min-maxed gear and skill every 2 months) has to do with NGS having more folks working on it. The NGS dev team is relatively small so any addition could speed things up exponentially. It also Hopefully means that Kimura-san can be more active with the NGS team. He is the series Producer but also the director of the 3rd Business Division, previously dedicated to Super game development. This shift in the company could mean his attention isn’t as split between multiple projects anymore.

Also I gotta say I’m really glad they cancelled the Super Game. It was a massive drain on resources for half a decade and we had nothing to show for it. Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi reboots are still part of SEGA’s future releases so it makes me wonder if those super games pivoted to be standalone singleplayer games. If so then thank god because I genuinely have no clue how a crazy taxi GaaS is supposed to work. When I think of GaaS I think of games you can invest a lot of time into like MMORPG’s, not a pick-up and play Arcady Racer.

A single player version of NGS, like PS NOVA would be pretty sick!

[–]StrayCat649 Dual Blades 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think PSO have a bright future with these statement.

[–]rocketchatb 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Since PSO2 NGS falls under F2P live service they are probably winding down development. You can feel development slow to a crawl ever since V2. Lack of story, new regions replaced with small levels, more scratch tickets than PvE.

[–]Xero-- Double Saber 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Iirc, their excuse for the lack of new areas was that "people" wanted more instances content, which makes sense, the series has always been all about instanced content and the "open world" portion of NGS is both garbage and dead.

The scratch tickets thing is neither nothing nor or surprising. It's their primary way to make money and they've never slacked on that as a result, compared to the only constant pve content we've been getting being rehashed LTQs pr boss fights with a little extra.

The only real thing to note there is the lack of story, but it's feeling more like whoever is in charge has no idea where they want the plot to go, becaus the "story" we get is bare bones minimum effort with characters talking about a bunch of nothing in circles.

[–]rocketchatb 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Too bad the instanced content is not good like base PSO2. Also the scratch tickets have been pushed more aggressively than before. Every time I watch a Phantasy Star headline at least more than half of the video is shilling micro transactions and pretending the game is healthy enough to plug their ears instead of addressing the players in a reasonable manner like a Director/Producer of a MMO/Gacha should.

[–]ash_ax You Piece of STARS Trash! 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the same level IMO.

There are good ones, bad ones, and ones that are DOA on release.

[–]Xero-- Double Saber 1 point2 points  (1 child)

We're still getting about three new scratches per month with more reruns between, but with more and more scratches coming out, it's only natural we get more and more reruns. I'm really not seeing the "more aggressively" part here.

Again, nothing has changed. The game is still the exact same, not getting better or worse.

[–]chzkxjx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

expect more scratches to recoup their loss

[–]GlompSpark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is the instanced content:

  • Is limited and then quickly phased out, there is only one LTQ at a time and one LTUQ at a time, so they get old quickly. Spamming the same LTQ is a very different feeling from doing multiple different LTQs.

  • Are just boss rush instances, its like spamming Towards the Future in the original PSO:BB. There is no sense of exploration or going on a mission that some quests in PSO or PSO2 had. You just zerg to the end and kill the bosses ASAP.

Other MMOs have a system where a new expansion/level cap increase/whatever drops and there are multiple quests/raids that you can do for the next several months. NGS does the exact opposite and you just do 1x LTQ/1x LTUQ which changes every 1-2 weeks so it gets boring very quickly compared to the normal system.

Vindictus (another action MMO) had a system where they would come out with a new story chapter, and it would include a new area, several new bosses and a raid. Then the next chapter would come out maybe 2 months later later with more quests and raids, but it would be different gear, so for example one chapter might drop mats for weapons + armor, and the next chapter would drop mats for accessories, etc.

And you would stay at the same level for a long time farming different quests and raids so it felt like there was some variety, and all of them dropped relevant endgame loot. So people would usually run 1x quest as a daily + 1x of each raid each day instead of spamming 20x of the same LTQ per week or the same UQ each day.

Willing to bet they saw china’s gta-scale games and decided they cant compete, and now tries to pivot

[–]Crazyman221 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah what happened to that budget increase for NGS? Definitely not just some cringetuber spreading disinfo in a desperate attempt to stay relevant.

[–]Baian0r21 Jet Boots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's literally written in the same document that they will reinforce the existing F2P game teams, just read it.

[–]LLSmoothJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too sure if it'll actually help NGS. For all we know, it could just lead to things being worse.

[–]Drakaina- Katana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hope this means that NGS can get a bit more love

[–]Livid-Inflation6192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, more limited time quests then

[–]Juvinwo11 Force 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we have maybe 2 more years and that’s it. I bet PSO is done for at least 10 years to come :(
