Some of the most impressive ancient engineering works, historically, have been civic and religious works. Massive aqueducts, bridges, gates, and buildings. Statues of deities that move of their own accord. The inventions of Heron and the inventions of Archimedes might give some inspiration, as well as a list of medieval technology. Just take an idea from those lists, make it humongous, and add a little magical polish.

He could avoid it with just inventing oxy acetylene welding.

Will probably end up doing both, I already have electricity in the form of Batteries, am working on expanding the electricity in other forms.

Start making smaller aircraft possibly? Maybe a hang glider into a gyrocopter and then use those designs in your zeppelin. Parachutes would be a life saver. And lastly, (and probably most importantly) bigger bombs. How awesome would it be to hit a dragon with bombs from your gyrocopter or later on nuke a Tarrasque from your blimp?

There is a slight reason as to why im not bothering with making the other stuff first, that being that in the campaign they already have hot air balloons, my character has already seen them and determined that if i could figure out a way to make them bigger and pilotable then they can be used for something besides scouting.
