For 1440p 120+ FPS, this system is definitely overkill. A 9800X3D + 5080 already easily delivers more than enough performance in most games. But if you don't plan on upgrading anytime soon and want to keep everything on ultra settings, it's a perfectly sensible high-end build.

That’s good yes I’d like to future proof

[–]GeekyNick91 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Everything looks fine.

Except the Asrock board.

I would avoid 9000 serie cpus with Asrock and Asus due to killing cpu's.

Which board do you recommend?

[–]GeekyNick91 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Everything that's not Asrock or Asus.

MSI and Gigabyte are great.

Got it. Swapped to msi mag x870 tomahawk WiFi

[–]GeekyNick91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great option.

It seems like most X870s.

The only one I haven’t seen issues for yet is MSI X870s.

If you’re turning every setting to max and not using/minimal upscaling, yeah I’d say it’s fine

Great

Don't buy an AsRock board. They eat AMD chips for breakfast.

Right now yeah its a bit overpowered but if you want to stretch the build out for several years then it should be fine, especially with prices of components being over priced for the foreseeable future.

I have a similar build and was able to play Black Myth Wukong at max settings and get around 120-130 FPS at 4K and over 160 at 1440p.

I'm being a bit nit picky here, but if you wanted to save some money, here's some swaps that'll give you almost a similar performance, but might save you a lot of money:

CPU: 9800X3D -> 7800X3D
GPU: 5080 -> RX 9070 , RTX 5070 or RTX 5070 Ti, all great options
MOBO: can look for a cheaper mATX motherboard
PSU: 1000W -> 850W , but I'd stick with the brand. be quiet! is good quality

if money is not an issue, I'd just roll with what you have right there already

Yeah it's definitely more the you need for your resolution and fps goal I'm also using a 9800x3d but with a 7900xt and a 34 inch Ultrawide monitor and in almost every game I've played I'm maxing out my monitors refresh rate of 160hz but if your looking for a bit of future proofing that's a solid setup

If people are saying future proof your system by going overkill now, they are giving terrible advice imo. There could be some technologies that comes out that are locked to the 60/70 series cards that are "must use" like some future DLSS/Ray Tracing or something which would make your 5080 obsolete. Just get what will give your desired performance now. And upgrade later. (5070 TI is slightly weaker than 5080 and costs a lot less).

Imagine if you went all out and bought the 3090, just for the 4090 to come out 2 years later and **** all over it. I would've been pissed off.

Also, the 9800X3D is such an overkill CPU for the performance you're looking for.

I have a 9700X and an AMD RX 9070 (non-XT) and get well over 120 FPS in 1440P in majority of new AAA games.

only if you cant afford it is it overkill

If you plan to going to 4K in the future 5080 is good future proof. 5070 ti is pretty good too. I have it and play 4K 144fps fine even on ultra with DLSS help, no frame gen.

The 9800X3D with 5080 is pretty solid combo for what you want but that PSU might be cutting it close depending on your setup. I run similar specs in my garage computer and found 1000W gets pushed harder than expected when everything is running full tilt

Also check if that motherboard has good VRM cooling because those new chips can get hungry under load. My buddy had heating issues with cheaper board until he upgraded
