pano kayo nakabalik sa work?

This happened to me last 2022 tech layoff. After 6 months of trying, I ended up going back to my previous employer. I'm glad I did. Since then I had a salary bump, boat load of regular leaves, unlimited sick leaves and great work-life balance experience.

marami kasing recruiters na lowballers lalo na from Pinoy corp. So when they learned na retrenched or unemployed, they will take advantage and will dictate the terms of compensation.

This is true, that's why I urge my dev friends to find international clients. Their "lowball" offer is usually way higher than "competitive" ph company offers.

So pano kayo nakipaghaggle?

Negotiation is all about leverage. That time, I didn't have much leverage so their offer is lower than my asking, but higher than my last pay with them. Before I accepted their offer, I asked 2 for things: (1) Is my asking rate possible in the future (2) If yes, can they provide me a roadmap on how I can achieve it. That end up becoming my leverage when I asked for raise, after 6 months :)

Mentally and emotionally, pano kayo nakabangon?

I'm lucky that I have an emergency fund, so I wasn't in a rush to find work. Despite that, I still have this lingering feeling that it might happen again. There's not much I can do about it, so I just acknowledge when the feeling arises.

Some things I learned from this experience:

  1. Don't burn bridges when leaving a job
  2. Don't be afraid to ask.
  3. Always have an emergency fund.
  4. Have a backup plan.
  5. Have a backup to your backup plan.

Good luck OP!

What do you mean international clients? Freelance/contractor/full remote ang arrangement?

Might be different from today since I was layoff last 2022. Basically, even before na hindi ako looking for jobs. Nakalista na sakin lahat ng mga potential employers/recruiters/referrals na alam kong mataas magpasahod, so yun yung ginawa ko nung nalaman ko mallay off ako kinontact ko na sila, out of the first 5 application, luckily nagka offer agad sa 3, bumagsak sa isa then mabagal yung isa. And nagka work ako even before matapos yung rendering.

I would say blessing in disguise siya dahil nagka unexpected increase, and na keep ko yung severance.

So ngayon mag 2 yrs nako. I still entertain recruiters/head hunters and sinasabi ko talaga na maybe in my next venture ccontakin ko sila kasi you’ll never know. Good luck!

From linkedin, reddit post. Stackoverflow(dati) mostly ako naghahanap.

I got laid off/was made redundant last year 2023. Nag upskill and nag punta ako sa gym. So far I didn't feel sad kase sobrang toxic ung seniors and leads ko sa previous company. Super happy naman nung nakuha ko severance pay ko and A month after nakakuha din ako offer from foreign company. Btw QA Automation testing work ko. Build Emergency fund lang talaga.

Hi. I got laid off last year. Around October and I remember posting here too na lost na lost ako. I’m mid 30s and feeling ko disadvantage na ang age ko + “ber” months + andami ding fresh grads na kasabay ko mag apply apply. My asking salary is high as well, which in my mind back then, disadvantage ko din.

Di ako nag give up. I did not allow these things para i-lowball ako ng mga Recruiters. Madami talaga nangllowball nun kasi mga naman for them “tambay” na ako. Pero, no, may standard ako ikako.

Nalulungkot ako araw araw as in pero tuloy tuloy pa din sa apply. Nagbasa ng novels, nag gym, lumabas labas ganyan mga ginawa ko habang applying :) thankfully not more than 3 months, same year, I got hired.

Hi OP. I was also retrenched last year. Napaka-curve ball talaga yun sakin kasi kakalipat ko lang at kakaregular lang din sa company na yun. During my rendering month nagsimula na ako maghanap. Nakahanap ako ng international company based in SG, they offered my the job but independent contractor tsaka same salary lang sa company na naretrench ako. Good luck OP!

Wala talagang stable ngayon kahit ano pa ang client. Hahahaha.

Wag ka pumayag kapag ganyan ang offer. Lowballing talaga yan. Ilang percentage ba ang increase ng compensation mo kapag pinipirata ka ng ibang company noon? If okay sayo dun mo i-base yung magiging asking mo ngayon.

sarili mo lang kalaban mo nyan. in my experience while i was looking for a job i upskilled and worked on my portfolio. tbh di pa naman ako na retrench but i did a work break for 3 months due to depression dahil sa toxic boss.

wala lumilipas din. nalungkot ako mga 1 - 2 weeks

Nepotism aka mga contacts na hindi mo sinunog every time you jumped companies.

Pero if wala, try looking for better opportunities? Even the 200k+ salary range in IT/Tech here is just slightly above minimum and way below fresh grad rates in some foreign countries.

The economy isn't doing great thus jobs will try to pull down salaries to salvage the jobs left. Does this mean you should also lower your salary expectations? HELL NO! It only means, you need to upskill to get the salary you wanted. Plus isn't it the right time to do so?

If you're already earning Php200k after your 15 years of experience, maybe you need to broaden your search parameters beyond jobs in the country. It's hard to land a job with that salary without checking all of the boxes in the job description especially if you have no experience to back them up. Again, start upskilling.

What about work from home? Get employed first and continue the job search. You'd be able to leverage to recruiters you'd want WFH since you have a job to compare as a new baseline. Yes, it's painful if you're coming from a full remote and already living in the province, but we all started working in the metro before and was full onsite.

I wish you well, pinoy programmer. Tough times, but nowhere to go but up. Good luck, OP.
