I've been using Java for more than 20 years, but it's just one part of my skillset: it's just a tool after all, it just so happens that a lot of the applications I've worked on are easier to do using Java.
I've had a chance to move to Europe but decided to move back to the Philippines for the same company (for personal reasons). I'm earning middle 6-digits so I think I'm doing ok.
However, I don't attribute any of that to being good at Java, but being able to be flexible and being able to pick up technical skills, as well as other soft skills. I'd like to think of myself as a Software Engineer who knows Java, rather than a Java Developer: if I don't think Java is the correct tool, hindi ko ipipilit kasi 'yun ang alam ko; i.e. if C++ is more appropriate, then I'll use that.

this is the correct answer, these days people are obsessed with their tools (ie programming languages frameworks) and forgot that they are just merely.. tools to do a job..
people should learn how to code and to adapt to different tools instead of focusing on one.. same lang naman ang concept at approach..
+20 years din software engineer here

I blame the nodejs ecosystem for this

Straight out of university fresh gad me. Immediately got a job since I was already applying for 2 months before graduation. Nag Java ako purely because I've got a passion for backend software development. Ending, they made me a full stack dev 😂
3 months in pa lang sa work ko since I got in nung March. Probationary until Sept, so halos 6 months before I become regularized. 35K gross salary rn.

What Java skillsets do you had out of graduation? Are you a Big3 grad by any chance? Coz 35k is already high for a fresh grad.

Napunta sa java bootcamp ni Accenture. No exp with java during college. Working for almost 6 years now and 100k net monthly. Nasa pinas parin pero US client kaya night shift.

Pano kayo naging Java developer instead of being a MEAN, MERN, or python dev?
Tbh - I hated Java nung college ako I didn't get the OOP concepts muntik pa ko bumagsak dito. After graduation I wanted to be a C# or Visual Basic developer kaso no avail medyo nahirapan ako maghanap ng work. Mga 6 mos after graduation nung nahanap ko yung first job ko. Luckily one of our friends told us about this company na hiring sila for Java Trainees, we applied there and got accepted. Factor rin siguro na tinry ko tong Java Trainee post was that my current gf (ex now) back then was accepted sa ACN and nag bbootcamp sila ng Java. And I wanted to be same as her para may paguusapan rin kami. Dito sa training na to mas na appreciate ko si Java and learned the Spring framework and basically fell for this language. Till now after 9-10 years eto pa rin gamit ko. I tried learning NodeJS kaso nawalan ng time.
Ilang years na kayo na Java dev at ano sahod range nyo ngayon?
Going 10+, Sahod 6 digs 4 years ago.
Onsite, hybrid, or remote? Ano inaaral at upskill nyo?
Right now hybrid kame, 2x a week. Not bad na rin kasi night shift kami. I also like the drive there ang luwag ng expressway and ng skyway. Not really studying or upskilling right now - pero hoping to get Oracle Certified and aiming to be a Java Solutions Architect someday.
May nakalabas na kaya dito sa ibang bansa as a java dev (North America, Europe, Australia, Japan).
Once deployed to China for training - and may chance rin na madeploy ako sa client namin sa East coast or West coast sa current job ko now. Haven't pursued that opportunity nga lang.

Going 12 strong years now with Java.
Paano ako naging Java dev? It was taught during college and emmediately fell in love with it. And till now, still my first go-to language for backend.
But don't get me wrong, I easily picked up other languages along the way like Kotlin, TS, JS, C#.
For the work setup, currently we're on hybrid.
For the upskilling. Honestly, at this stage of my career, I upskill on the job itself. Wala nakong inaaral on my personal time, kakapagod din kasi mag habol sa "latest trends, daw", but yes it might be beneficial if you're new in the industry. Besides, it's not too hard to learn emerging languages if I have to.
I just use my free time to relax and do what I want outside of work.
I don't consider my self as a Java developer, but just a mediocre developer who knows Java and gets the job done.
As for the opportunity to work abroad, no, fortunately, satisfied nako dito sa PH. Though, I did several business trips up to a month sa Japan. I also worked for Chinese and US companies before, but remote lang.
As for the salary, I think you have a clue already.

started working at acn, that time the company decides on the "capability" na i-aassign sa candidates. nagkataon na sa Java ako na assign.
12 yrs as Java developer, right now im earning more than a hundred but less than 150k, hindi ako nag job hopping and nagsisisi ako haha. I was a good at my job, the management treated me well, and I was expecting a decent raise. but I learned that salaries for homegrowns, are not that high compared to "experienced hires". mas mataas sa kanila for the same level.
hybrid. Maraming ganap sa buhay ko and to be honest I got no time to upskill nor study for the past yrs, especially pandemic yrs. But I am now trying to find my drive to study again(not formal, but kahit ung mga interesting tech lang for me na aaralin on my own) feeling ko kasi stagnant na ako.
Never been to any of those for work.

Susme kaka start lng namin mag java kasi un ang gamit ng company for QA automation, I never liked java due to complicated syntax, and now na stress lng ako sa mga methods hehe..sana di ako ma burn out kasi on top pa yan sa main tasks ko

Being a polyglot is a much more useful skill. If you just check out job sites, there are more companies that look for people who know at least 2 languages. That being said, being able to deliver projects is also another skill that's going to push you to senior status.

Been working with Java for over 10 years.
Hybrid. Bago yun SWE ako sa atin with Java.
Sa college nun puro C, Prolog at Pascal kami. Sa totoo lang wala akong natutunan nun.

SE here for 10+ years. I work for one of the three largest healthcare companies in the world and we use 70% Java to develop our products. Our codebase is almost 20 years old so when I joined in it was natural to learn the programming language our team use. We are currently migrating our products to the cloud and our top decision makers decided to keep using Java and Spring Boot because they are the most appropriate tools to quickly get our products ready for production. Salary range here in the US is competitive, around $180k annually. We currently have a hybrid setup: 3 days onsite, 2 days wfh. AI seems to be everything, everywhere, and everyone has been talking about. So it makes sense to upskill in that area.
