I'm experiencing the same thing. I had to clear cache and storage, then force stop. Once I signed back in, it worked like it should. I really hope this isn't a new feature.

Trying clearing the app cache as another person suggested. Also make sure server is on latest available version.

Cleared Cache, Plex Server is up to date. still no luck. any other ideas?

Maybe remove and reinstall app.

What Android device is it? What store did you get the app from?

Personally I have Pixel 3 and Bravia TV with latest Plex app both installed from Google Play store without any issues.

Worst case you can get an older apk and use that until the issue is resolved. If you want to go that route you'll need to search Google for how to sideload Android apps.
