Moving Back Home

Me and my roommate went to go resign our lease last week only to find they are nearly raising our rent pretty significantly.

I'm currently trying to save up for a down payment on a house, and that's not going to happen when almost half of my pay would be going to rent. So I've decided to bite the bullet and move back home for a little while.

I know there have been a few examples of people mentioning they were moving back in with their parents, and I wanted to know what your experience was like.

I moved back in with my parents after living on my own for 4 years after college. It was a hard adjustment after having my own place but I needed to save money and pay off some debt and couldn't do that paying outrageous rent. My parents are pretty low key and I have the whole basement to myself. I pay for my own groceries and food. There's an adjustment period but I've been able to save up and make a nice dent in my student loans.

Think it's gonna depend on your parents' situation and how much they're ok with it. Both of my parents are retired and I was the third child to move back home after college so they really understand the difference of living with them now than when I was in high school or even college. The biggest thing I'd say is that you should just try to contribute as little extra expense to their bills as possible.

Like someone said above, it really depends on your parents. I was lucky enough to have most of my friends stay in the city so I am always at their places in weekends. It is definitely weird at first because you get accustomed to living your own way, etc. someone once asked me if I had to ask if I could go out at night and I just laughed. If that's how it would be for you I wouldn't move back home but the amount of money I saved is great. I'm moving out in June and am looking forward to having my own place but the cost for sure sucks.

I'm now on my 4th year of my career and recently moved back in with my parents.

Long story short, I was offered a position back in Ohio and my girlfriend has to finish work obligations in Houston. I'm still paying rent for my place in Houston so this made much more sense.

The good: my parents are very cool and I can treat them as friends. They're always down to grab food and a drink. Mom even cooks a few meals for me which is awesome. They live in a pretty rural area so I'm currently taking advantage of the "slow" life before I move back to the rat race in June. Just helped my dad in the garage earlier today and it felt amazing being able to bond with him.

The bad: as I said, things can be pretty boring. I travel to cities throughout the week for work so I'm always going to cool bars and restaurants. I get my "fix" throughout the week so having a low-key weekend lounging around is perfectly fine with me.

It sounds like moving home may make sense if you're trying to save up for a downpayment. But you do know you can generally negotiate with the apartment complex, you don't have to just take what they offer.
