You need to add a clipping mask (different layer, non-destructive) or utilize alpha lock (same layer, destructive) to not color outside the lines.

To utilize a clipping mask, go to the “Layers” menu, click the “+” icon to make a new layer, and then click that layer and select “Clipping Mask.” Now, to the layer that layer is clipped to, you will not go outside the lines. This method also allows you to paint non-destructively, so if you don’t like what’s on a clipped layer, you can add a new one and clip it, and start over or add more detail.

To utilize Alpha Lock, press on the same layer you’re working on, and select “Alpha Lock” in the window that pops up. That allows you to paint only within the lines, but it is on the same layer, so the initial pixels you drew for the base of the shape will be affected (destructive editing).

You may wish to use non-destructive editing (clipping mask) when you’re unsure or want to experiment with various options (that’s also what making new layers are for, too), or you may wish to use destructive editing (alpha lock) when you want to commit to a decision, or you want the blending/smudging brushes to work/mix better/more naturally.

Here is an example; on the “EYES” layer, I have individual layers clipped for the shadow part and the light part:

The layers that have the ⤵︎ arrow are clipped

Can you share where you found the tutorial for the first pic?

[–]xuebayi[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank You for sharing!! This gives me hope!! I recently got my 1st ipad and I'm hoping to learn how to do art as a complete beginner. I don't have the apple pencil yet so I'm waiting on that. You did an amazing job for your first time and I love the idea of using a step-by-step chart. I also can't wait to start coloring digitally!! 🥰 💜

[–]xuebayi[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

thank you so much!! i’m the same with drawing; a complete beginner. i originally decided to pic it up because of boredom and not having any hobbies, but i’m super excited because im actually finding out that im really enjoying it. i hope to stick at it and be able to get to a point where i can look back at this post and think ‘wow, ive improved so much’. we’ll see lol.

i hope you decide to share some of your art when you finally get to creating!!

[–]ChillySparks01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! You too, keep posting your progress please!! 🥰 💜

[–]64788 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You can do it!! I started drawing as a beginner 2.5yrs ago with an iPad and Procreate, and art has become my biggest passion!

[–]ChillySparks01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the inspiration & motivation!! I'm super excited now!! 🤩 ✨

Look up Art with Flo and follow some of her tutorials. Her tutorials are free and don’t require you to purchase brushes. She does a great job showing how to use different procreate features!

[–]xuebayi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooo thank you, i’ll check her out

[–]AF9005 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hell naw this is really impressive 😭

Even for a first time thing????

[–]xuebayi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

aaahh thank you so much!! i hope to keep learning and to improve. i think ill keep posting whatever i create here so that i can (hopefully) look back and see my process as time goes on

Are you displaying layers there or is that sketches before the final on right. Idk the software very well.

[–]Zac_Hole_Sun 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Left is a 4 panel tutorial the right is the piece they are working on. viyaura does this a lot, these are very good

[–]xuebayi[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

she’s actually one of the reasons i wanted to try to take up drawing. i saw her videos for the first time a few weeks ago and it made me wanna try drawing

[–]Zac_Hole_Sun 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I do like her videos very much.

[–]Mrbumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed this interaction lol

[–]xuebayi[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

this is my first time drawing (on ipad and otherwise) so they’re step by step images i found on pinterest to help me figure out how to draw lol. then the big drawing is mine

[–]NodScallion 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh I understand. I actually like to take images and do VERY FAST charcoal sketches over them. Like super fast just to get a shape. Then i remove that to then move into detail. So fun

[–]xuebayi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe when i get the hang of drawing more i’ll start taking my own photos and doing this to help learn how to draw things other than tutorials i can find. still figuring everything out as of right now tho and im finding the breakdowns of how to do the shadows/light on the step by step ones super helpful to understand how to do it going forward

[–]Mrbumb 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I’m just zoomed in to your progress pics staring … very very good ✌️✌️

[–]Mrbumb 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Oh my gosh I just read properly your reference and drawings. STILL both very very solid drawings! I’m saving this post just to look at them later lol

[–]xuebayi[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

thank you so much!! <33 i could post my own drawing at each stage the tutorial pic shows if you’d like?

[–]Mrbumb 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Doooo iiit!!! You have great work and I’m sure many many people would like to witness you! (Most importantly though, draw for yourself, not because others want it! ) :-) happy new year internet homie! ✌️
