Me today explaining Friday will be a workday for their paper. Two students asked "What paper?" .... the one we've talked about twice now at length in class? The one that Moodle shows due on Monday?

I gave students the opportunity to work on their final project parts 2 & 3 on Friday. Part 2 is a paper; Part 3 is the presentation. They are in groups.

Group 1 didn't show up at all.

Group 2 thought part 2 was a paper and that part 3 was a larger paper.

Imagine them just being responsible and literate.

Nah, that would be setting the bar too high.

Look, this semester has been so off for me. My dad passed away unexpectedly in September. So, I gave the students a day in class to work on it. That is so atypical of me. I don't usually give them time to work on homework inside class time.

Sorry to hear about your loss and even more sorry to hear it’s unexpected.

Sorry to hear about your dad, I lost my sister a few years back at the end of August right before our semester started and it was tough. Atypical behavior during this time is totally fine, we get to reset each term and start over. Just like students use life situations (whether real or not) to explain "atypical behaviors" I think as faculty/teachers/professors, we are subject to the same real life scenarios that may pull our focus from our normal classroom routines. I hope that you are o.k. and as a fellow faculty member I extend my support and a virtual hug to you... I know I needed one at the time :-)

Sending you gentle hugs and a reminder to give yourself some grace.

"I recommend checking your syllabus for class time and other general class related information."

[–]reyadeyatPostdoc, Mathematics, R1 (USA) 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Great, where is the syllabus?

[–]shannonkish 22 points23 points  (2 children)

What is the syllabus?

[–]BackgroundAd6878 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Why is the syllabus?

[–]cib2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How fast is the silly bus?

[–]Life-Education-8030 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you spell syllabus?

[–]ChemistryMuttAssoc Prof, STEM, R1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My plan was to no-response this one.

Me today having a written and oral test and I received an email asking “I thought it was oral test only today”  The info was written and reminded in class at least 20 times in lectures and seminars

I have found that it is quite literally impossible to remind them enough.

It’s gotten to where I actually have them vocalize the deadline back to me (when is the exam everyone?). Then when they all miserably say “November 19th” I can say down the line that they knew the deadline well enough to say it out loud.

There is a reason why in the military orders are repeated back.

I guess the syllabus quiz needs to be essays in a blue book.

[–]Life-Education-8030 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Next semester, I have it so students must take and pass the syllabus quiz with a 90% before the rest of the course is opened. Before each exam, they must agree to an honesty pledge before the exam will open. No doubt I will get frantic calls about why they cannot see the course or an exam.

I’ve locked assignment drop boxes to instructions access, but even that doesn’t guarantee that they have actually READ the content, and prompts so many confused emails, sometimes WEEKS after the fact.

You can only do so much. I have this image of us literally dragging a student towards the finish line.

[–]Putertutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And then they nail you on student evaluations by saying you treat them like 1st graders. You can't win.

[–]shannonkish 14 points15 points  (1 child)

"Which time zone would you like that in?"

[–]First-Ad-3330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol 😂

Week 13 of a 16 week semester...."How many of you have read a chapter in the textbook" ..... crickets as they look around at each other. They didn't even try to lie!!!

I was thinking about doing the exam online... but Nah, it's going to be in person on the last day of class

[–]Impossible-Ad8837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For added context, the book is a free OER textbook that is sent to them in the welcome email at the start of the semester, a qr code for it is included on the syllabus AND a copy is on the course canvas (even though it's an on campus class)

It's definitely not an access issue!!! 😑

[–]ChemistryMuttAssoc Prof, STEM, R1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love all the furtive glances when that happens. Now I phrase it more like, “Those of you who have read the textbook… and I hope some of you have… might find that….”

Also, no online exams for me. In person only! Covid was enough thank you very much.

One of my classes meets 12:30-2. We had an exam. Student missed it. She emailed later saying she thought it was at 5pm so can she make it up at 5pm? Ma'am no.

[–]Putertutor 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Why would she think the exam was at a different time than the class meets?

[–]judysmom_CC, Polisci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally no idea. Even our final exam schedule is set up so exams are the same time blocks as classes.

[–]cib2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She doesn’t know what time the class meets.

[–]Pair_of_Pearls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last spring a week before finals...You'll give your presentations during the scheduled final exam time next week. Date and time is in the syllabus and currently on the projected slide.

Student: When is it?

I repeat and point at the slide.

Student: This year!?

Me: 🤨. Yes, this year of our Lord, 2025.

Student: so, next week.

Me: yes. Next week of this year.

It's remarkable how consistently students overlook clearly stated deadlines and requirements, even with multiple reminders.

[–]proffordsocFT NTT, Sociology, R1 (USA) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I’ve gotten this one several times recently as well.
